Disk Fragmentation in a VMware Environment | 2008-02-15 | Raxco Software |
| The purpose of a virtual machine is to allow the user to allocate physical systems resources to multiple tasks. In many computer operations, the CPU and memory resources are underutilized. Virtual machines allow an organization to get better resource utilization without the added expense of new hardware. They also provide a portable environment that can keep a system going on an alternative platform when there is a hardware failure. In the case of VMware, a virtual machine is created on a host disk. Many administrators believe it is a good practice to keep all their virtual machines in one directory. The virtual machine consists of two main files: the VMX file and the VMDK file. | |||

IT Manager Webcast: Taking Control of Your Services With Service Virtualization (Level 200) | 2008-02-07 | Microsoft |
| Organizations are starting to reach the limits of their initial Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) efforts because of an inability to control, maintain, and trust their services for mission-critical applications. Service virtualization enables to overcome some of the limitations of service implementations by managing endpoints, operations, and policies, instead of Web Services Description Language (WSDL) tools. This webcast looks at the Managed Services Engine (MSE), a solution developed by Microsoft Services that facilitates service virtualization by applying Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Microsoft SQL Server. It provides an overview of the architecture that utilizes emerging patterns such as service repositories, runtime brokers, and dynamic behaviors that can support runtime execution through metadata and configuration.

ISA Server 2006 Virtualization Licensing | 2008-02-01 | Microsoft |
| Virtual Machine (VM) technology can provide a number of significant benefits to the organization, including optimized hardware utilization, better business continuity, and a more agile infrastructure. With VM technology, one can extend hardware infrastructure by running multiple operating system environments on a single server or other hardware system. Microsoft has developed licensing models that enable to take advantage of the benefits and capabilities of VM technology. This paper provides an overview of ISA Server 2006 licensing and addresses some common scenarios to help to better understand how to license ISA Server 2006 in virtual environments. | |||

HP BladeSystem Technology in a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Environment | 2008-02-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| This paper provides information on how HP BladeSystem technology can assist in making a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 environment a well managed, better performing, more reliable environment. It documents each HP c-Class BladeSystem component and maps the technology of that component to various Microsoft applications so one can make informed decisions about how to configure the most cost-effective, best managed, most power saving, most temperature-efficient Microsoft Windows Server 2008 application server infrastructure possible.

Moving Mainframe Applications to Windows: Considering the Options to Preserve, Translate, or Rewrite | 2008-02-01 | Microsoft |
| The paper aims to raise awareness of the available software solutions that can be used to move mainframe language applications to the Windows operating system, and to indicate additional resources. It describes briefly the broader issues concerning modernizing mainframe applications and the options available, and it then explores three solutions to the language problem, ranging from recompiling the application on Windows to a complete rewrite. A further option, to replace the existing custom code with a packaged solution, while entirely viable and commonly adopted for generic business applications, is outside the scope of this paper.

Mass Distributed Server Consolidation: System z Mainframe Linux-on-z/VM Extreme Virtualization Far Outclasses Over-Hyped x86/x64 Approaches | 2008-02-01 | Software Strategies |
| This paper reviews the scale-out, distributed server proliferation catastrophe, and looks at why IT infrastructure optimization is now a business imperative. It evaluates the role of virtualization, and the varied approaches that have been implemented in server partitioning/virtualization. The paper includes its newer, mass-distributed server consolidation role. Its already powerful strengths are also soon to be amplified by arrival of the next-generation, new IBM z6 System z MPUpowered mainframes.

Best Practices for Server Virtualization | 2008-01-22 | Computer Measurement Group (CMG) |
| Logical partitioning of the mainframe environment has existed for several years. Logical partitioning of the distributed environment using products such as VMWare's ESX Server or Microsoft's Virtual Server is gaining momentum as companies look to improve their return on investment with server consolidation projects. This paper reviews some of the virtualization techniques now available in the server environment, and what best practices should be put in place to maximize the benefits of virtual servers. |
