whitepaper True Parallel Processing in Artificial Neural Networks2007-10-22 Emerald
The area of artificial neural networks, which dates back to the early twentieth century, could only offer positive contributions to technology after the back-propagation algorithm was proposed in 1986. In this note an alternative algorithm to the gradient descent used in back-propagation is proposed. This algorithm is based on the discrete central difference. This procedure, as opposed to the back-propagation algorithm, offers the possibility of true parallel computation.

whitepaper Security on z/VM2007-10-18 IBM
This paper discusses the security aspects of z/VM facilities and introduces how z/VM virtualization can provide a secure isolation between guests on System z. The paper will also discuss Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) and Ligthweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) on z/VM and how they can be used to allow an enterprise wide point of control.

whitepaper VirtualPower: Coordinated Power Management in Virtualized Enterprise Systems2007-10-17 Association for Computing Machinery
Power management has become increasingly necessary in large-scale datacenters to address costs and limitations in cooling or power delivery. This paper explores how to integrate power management mechanisms and policies with the virtualization technologies being actively deployed in these environments. The goals of the proposed VirtualPower approach to online power management are to support the isolated and independent operation assumed by guest Virtual Machines (VMs) running on virtualized platforms and to make it possible to control and globally coordinate the effects of the diverse power management policies applied by these VMs to virtualized resources. To attain these goals, VirtualPower extends to guest VMs 'Soft' versions of the hardware power states for which their policies are designed.
whitepaper TechNet Webcast: Windows Server Virtualization Under the Hood (Level 200)2007-10-17 Microsoft
This webcast concentrates on the new Windows Server virtualization feature in Windows Server 2008. It starts with a quick recap of Microsoft Virtual Server before covering the new hypervisor-based architecture. The webcast looks at the integrated management for virtual and physical resources, including the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) consoles, the new virtual machine creation wizard, the conversion tools, and the performance enhancements that have been made, in addition to integration into Group Policy.
whitepaper TechNet Webcast: A 360 View Inside the Virtual World (Level 200)2007-10-15 Microsoft
This webcast laid the foundation of the Microsoft virtualization strategy and solutions. It starts with a look at what virtualization is and provides an insight into the overall Microsoft virtualization strategy, ranging from the desktop to the data center. The webcast clear up misconceptions about virtualization and describe what products provide virtualization solutions. Next, it moves on and looks at the Microsoft road map for virtualization, before examining what workloads make good candidates for virtualization and explaining why to consider moving these workloads into a virtual world.
whitepaper Index Compression with DB2 9 for z/OS2007-10-07 IBM
In data warehouse applications, it is common to have many very large indexes defined on large tables. It is also possible that the index spaces exceed the size of the tables upon which the indexes are based. As one way of helping to manage the cost of ownership, in DB2 9 for z/OS (New Function Mode) one can choose to compress indexes and can define indexes with a page size larger than 4 KB. Compression has been available for table spaces on z/OS since DB2 Version 3. This paper explains some of the significant differences between data and indexes in the way that compression is managed, as well as a comparison of the performance characteristics.

whitepaper Performance Impacts With Optimized Virtual Environments on Intel Virtualization Technology-Based Platforms2007-10-07 Intel
Intel constantly benchmarks the virtual environment deployment scenarios on platforms with Intel Virtualization Technology. The testing helps to develop some valuable techniques for optimizing virtual environments and various types of workloads. These techniques are outlined in the paper "Optimizing Virtual Environments on Intel Virtualization Technology-enabled Platforms," which one can download from the Intel web site. The benchmark results in this paper show how optimization techniques helped minimize the delta between virtual and native performance. The benchmarks are based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 using the Xen Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) hosts and both Linux and Microsoft Windows guests on Intel Virtualization Technology-enabled platforms.
whitepaper A Power Benchmarking Study on the IBM System z9: Applying Energy Efficiency Metrics to Performance2007-10-04 IBM
Over the past few years energy efficiency in the data center has become one of the top concerns for IT managers. As the cost of power grows significantly, the application of energy efficiency to systems performance becomes a metric that can not be ignored. IBM has long been a champion of energy efficiency and the IBM System z9 is an outstanding platform for the integration of power efficiency and performance. This paper will demonstrate the role of the IBM System z9 as an excellent platform for power efficiency and performance, discuss tools used for measuring z9 power, highlight a Java power benchmarking study on this platform, and analyze client server consolidation as an energy management strategy.
whitepaper Turkish Vehicle Firm Implements Integrated Customer Relationship Management System2007-10-01 Microsoft
Borusan Otomotiv wanted to use e-mail and text messages to communicate with customers, but this was impossible with the existing system. Sales and service departments had difficulty accessing and sharing each other's customer information. The firm assessed a number of Web-based products. Some of them had complicated structures or no product support in Turkey. Microsoft partner Tradesoft demonstrated Microsoft Dynamics CRM to Borusan Otomotiv executives who were impressed by its ease of use, receptiveness to customization, and long-term support by Microsoft. Tradesoft had previous experience of installing Microsoft Dynamics CRM at another Borusan subsidiary Borusan Telekom. Muhammet Atalay, CRM Software Development Specialist, Tradesoft, successfully managed the integration of Microsoft Dynamics CRM with the firm's AS/400 mainframe system and then tackled integration of customer and vehicle histories.
