Microsoft Webcast: Infosys and Microsoft Present: Modernizing From Mainframes to Next-Generation IT Systems (Level 100) | 2008-07-16 | Microsoft |
| In a flattening world, agile companies will succeed because their underlying IT systems can rapidly adapt to changing business priorities. Companies are moving towards Software as a Service (SaaS) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to provide the required flexibility in IT systems, so that IT remains relevant to business. Mainframe applications built decades ago were never meant to support such a changing environment. The focus was on automating specific business processes and processing large volumes of information for the lowest cost possible. Speed of execution and not flexibility was the main criteria. Since Windows Server 2008 provides power and performance equivalent to hundreds of mainframe MIPS, the cost model on which earlier applications were written has been turned on its head.

PeopleSoft Enterprise Payroll 8.9 Using DB2 V9 for z/OS on an IBM z Platform | 2008-06-01 | IBM |
| There were two objectives of this benchmark project. The first was to exercise the DB2 V9 z/OS code with the standard Large Model PeopleSoft Payroll workload. The second objective, which was of high interest to the PeopleSoft Users Group community, was to see how well these batch processes scale on DB2 using an "Extra Large" Model. This paper summarizes the experience and the results of this benchmark.

TechNet Webcast: XFRAME: Powerful Tools for Legacy Modernization by HTWC (Level 200) | 2008-04-24 | Microsoft Tips |
| Modernization of previous mainframe applications and data is a key strategic issue in today's corporate IT environment. This webcast presents an overview of XFRAME, a powerful mainframe migration and rehosting platform that enables companies to move mainframe workloads to the Windows Server platform. Rehosting with XFRAME is a cost-effective, highly automated, and low-risk choice for mainframe migration. XFRAME is one of the only complete mainframe rehosting environments currently available that supports the Windows Server environment. The presenter shows how XFRAME can play a key role in helping companies achieve a complete consolidation onto Microsoft products.

Insight and Outlook, Part 11: The Resurgence of the Mainframe - Reassess the Mainframe as the Center of Your Business Management System | 2008-03-25 | IBM |
| IBM has seen growth in its System z mainframe business for six of the last nine quarters, according to IBM quarterly earnings statements. A curious, possibly surprising development, eh? Midsize UNIX boxes, grid computing schemes, and server farms made up of dozens of smaller systems seem to dominate today's IT infrastructure. On the software side, the authors hear about lightweight scripting, high-level languages, distributed application architectures such as Web services and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), and so on. It seems a foregone conclusion that the days of CICS programming and big iron are soon to be far behind, right?

Introduction to Data on System z | 2008-03-01 | IBM |
| The data sources covered in this paper were chosen based on their presence in customer environments. Although some of these data sources are not necessarily growing, they do exist in current day environments. T The other purpose of choosing these data sources was because of their interaction with the WebSphere Classic Integration Products. This paper serves as an introduction to data on the mainframe. The goal of this paper is to introduce some key concepts for the different data sources not to make users experts. | |||

Moving Mainframe Applications to Windows: Considering the Options to Preserve, Translate, or Rewrite | 2008-02-01 | Microsoft |
| The paper aims to raise awareness of the available software solutions that can be used to move mainframe language applications to the Windows operating system, and to indicate additional resources. It describes briefly the broader issues concerning modernizing mainframe applications and the options available, and it then explores three solutions to the language problem, ranging from recompiling the application on Windows to a complete rewrite. A further option, to replace the existing custom code with a packaged solution, while entirely viable and commonly adopted for generic business applications, is outside the scope of this paper.

Mass Distributed Server Consolidation: System z Mainframe Linux-on-z/VM Extreme Virtualization Far Outclasses Over-Hyped x86/x64 Approaches | 2008-02-01 | Software Strategies |
| This paper reviews the scale-out, distributed server proliferation catastrophe, and looks at why IT infrastructure optimization is now a business imperative. It evaluates the role of virtualization, and the varied approaches that have been implemented in server partitioning/virtualization. The paper includes its newer, mass-distributed server consolidation role. Its already powerful strengths are also soon to be amplified by arrival of the next-generation, new IBM z6 System z MPUpowered mainframes.
