whitepaper SAP Application Server Consolidation on IBM System z: Opportunity, Metrics, and Case Studies2008-01-10 IBM
SAP customers never run just one SAP system - they run many. Part of the reason is that each production SAP system is part of a "flock" of SAP systems with associated non-production systems. These associated non-production SAP systems are for purposes such as development, test, training, and quality assurance. Customers may also have several of these flocks to service different geographies, lines of business, and functions such as SAP's Business Intelligence Warehouse (BW). More recently, SAP has been introducing "confederations" of production systems. For example, SAP is beginning to require certain infrastructure SAP systems such as Enterprise Portal, Solution Manager, and Master Data Management.

whitepaper Enabling the Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS Interface to the Tivoli Enterprise Portal2007-12-14 IBM
Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS version 8.3 gives operators and job schedulers the ability to view the status of important batch work from within the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Tivoli Enterprise Portal and relate the performance of this work with the performance of other system resources. If batch jobs are running late or failing, then it can be more quickly determined what is delaying this work as well as the impact from failures.

whitepaper The z/OS SOA Scenario Testing Project: A Detailed Experience Report2007-12-10 IBM
The purpose of the z/OS SOA Scenario Testing project was to provide a fundamental "proof point" for a SOA solution on z/OS for a single realization; demonstrating the inherent value the z/OS platform provides for deploying SOA based applications. Secondly, to document the development and deployment processes for this project and make this information available to the customers who are also investigating and/or implementing SOA based architectures using technology hosted on z/OS.

whitepaper A Synopsis of System z Crypto Hardware2007-12-02 IBM
The IBM System z cryptographic hardware provides a rich array of encryption capabilities. The functionality available depends on the specific platform and the hardware that has been installed. This paper begins with a brief introduction of crypto functions, and issues common to all the platforms, and then provides a synopsis of the System z crypto hardware.

whitepaper IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series Copy Export Function User's Guide Version 1.12007-12-01 IBM
The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series is the latest in the line of tape virtualization products that has revolutionized the way mainframe customers utilize their tape resources. One of the key reasons to use tape is for recovery of critical operations in the event of a disaster. The TS7700, in a Grid configuration, provides for automatic, remote replication of data that supports recovery time and recovery point objectives measured in seconds. For customers that do not require the recovery times that can be obtained in a Grid configuration, a new function called Copy Export is being introduced for the TS7700.

whitepaper IBM System z Software Performance: Large Memory Performance Studies2007-12-01 IBM
Reducing DASD I/O and keeping data in memory, close to the actual processing unit, has long been proven to have measurable performance value. It just makes sense to avoid extraneous CPU time and elapsed time managing buffer pools, initiating DASD I/O to retrieve the data, and interrupting the currently executing work unit. Utilizing more real memory essentially eliminates some of those DASD control unit cache read hits because the data can be found in processor memory. This paper demonstrates three performance advantages studies of utilizing more memory across several different environments. These benefits can vary quite a bit by environment so some analysis is required to assure adding more memory will help performance.
whitepaper Performance and Scalability of a Large OLTP Workload With DB2 9 for System z on Linux2007-12-01 IBM
This paper demonstrates data server scalability for DB2 9 running on IBM System z with Linux. It captures the best practices for deploying IBM DB2 9 for mission critical OnLine Transaction Processing (OLTP) workloads in their product environment. IBM System z technologies offer a rich set of platform-deployment features ranging from well-known mainframe attributes such as reliability, availability, scalability, and security to features like the very high capacity and bandwidth of the I/O subsystem. DB2 9, a leading data server in the information management market, offers rich value added capabilities to help customers meet their transaction processing demands.

whitepaper z/VM Large Memory: Linux on System z2007-12-01 IBM
Both z/VM 5.2 and z/VM 5.3 were able to handle the scenario with a relatively large amount of physical memory (80 GB) and the use of twice as much virtual memory than physically available (memory overcommitment). The usage of z/VM 5.3 and VMRM-CMM is recommended for this type of workload (transactional database workload using asynchronous disk I/O). In the memory overcommitted case, z/VM 5.3 shows significant improvements for performance compared to z/VM 5.2. The features VMRM-CMM and CMMA require that the most current fixes available for these features for Linux and z/VM are installed. Memory overcommitment is expected to cause performance degradation, where VMRMCMM reduces that impact to 13%, which is a very small impact for a memory overcommitment of a factor of two.

whitepaper The CIO's Guide to Legacy Optimization2007-09-01 Tata Consultancy Services

The ongoing increase in maintenance and licensing costs for existing applications leaves only a limited share of the IT budget for new investments in more strategic IT capabilities. Today, this has become a serious concern for Chief Information Officers (CIOs). Needless to say, a major part of the legacy systems resides in mainframes. Some of these are in-house and some rented from infrastructure providers. In addition, multiple licensing models based on mainframe usage add another cost dimension.

This white paper provides an overview of the economics and technicalities involved in optimizing legacy systems to save ongoing IT costs, with particular focus on mainframe systems.

whitepaper SMF Recording With MVS Logger2007-11-08 IBM
Many z/OS customers have begun to suffer from an overload of data provided by the System Management Facility (SMF). As the systems have grown ever faster and larger, doing more and more work generates more and more data from SMF used to measure, manage, and audit their z/OS environment. With the SMF data volumes increasing, the peak recording rates for this data is more and more often exceeding the capacity for recording and offloading. When this happens there is a significant risk of losing the very data they depend on. This project will validate a solution provided in z/OS Release 1.9, against sample customer data rates and volumes.
