whitepaper The Datacenter Mainframe: Cost Efficient, Performance Icon2007-09-01 Ptak, Noel & Associates
The Mainframe has long been an unacknowledged and underappreciated datacenter workhorse. But, rising energy costs and a renewed focus on operational performance are revealing the inefficiencies inherent in distributed processors whether the metric is utilization, footprint, or power to performance ratios. The low entry price of System z9 Business Class mainframes heightened interest in many market segments. IBM Tivoli's announcements of broad range of detailed monitoring, management and reporting capabilities provide financial details for mainframe advocates. This paper discusses the management tools, documentation techniques, reduced prices, architectural advantages and enhanced capabilities that make a case for the mainframe systems that even the most hardcore distributed server advocates cannot ignore.

whitepaper Unleash the Power of Mainframe Assets Into SOA2007-09-01 IBM
Organizations that run the IBM System z platform have unique business requirements. Their commitment to the high-availability server platform demonstrates their need for an environment that can support high-volume transaction processing with demanding batch windows and large, critical application portfolios. Organizations with System z environments typically have large numbers of developers with broad skill sets in various areas of business and technology, as well as a diverse set of applications, processes and standards. They also have the highest expectations for the quality of service and value they want their systems to deliver internally and externally to their customers. This paper examines these challenges and how System z clients can take advantage of the assets they already have.

whitepaper z/VM Virtualization Performance2007-09-01 IBM
There are new virtualization techniques in the market for various platforms. The objective of this paper is to show the scalability of WebSphere Application Server environments using the Trade benchmark running under the virtualization product z/VM. One environment consisted of an IBM HTTP Server, a WebSphere Application Server, and an IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) all installed on separate Linux guests. This setup is referred to a triplet in this document. A special feature of a virtualized environment is that it is possible to assign the guests more virtual resources (memory, processors) than physically available; this is called over-commitment. The possibility to overcommit makes virtualization very attractive because it allows a much better utilization of the hardware resources.

whitepaper Mainframe-to-Windows Server Move Speeds Key Process 33 Percent at Southern Company0000-00-00 Microsoft
One of the mission-critical processes at Southern Nuclear - the nuclear facilities subsidiary of energy giant Southern Company - is granting clearances for employees and contractors who enter its facilities. That process was managed by an aging mainframe that could no longer handle the increasing pace of new federal regulations and changing business needs. So, Southern Nuclear turned to Computer Technology Solutions, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Together, they created the Employee Plant Access Control Tracking system (EmPACT), a Web-based solution running on Microsoft technologies. As a result, Southern Nuclear gains the flexibility to meet new regulations and requirements, has cut the length of the authorization process by 33 percent, and saves 74 percent of the cost of maintaining the former mainframe solution.

whitepaper OpenPGP Key Exchange and Migration2007-08-06 IBM
Business exchange processes must define the mechanism for establishing trust among partners. Using cryptography as the foundation for trust, the OpenPGP support on z/OS and its use of the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) within IBM's Java 5 SDK for z/OS, allow for three options: Passphrase exchange, OpenPGP certificate exchange, and X.509 certificate exchange. This paper describes the steps for exchanging OpenPGP certificates, X.509 certificates, and public/private key pairs, using the OpenPGP support and IBM Java 5 SDK tools: keytool and hwkeytool.

whitepaper Mainframe Modernization and Re-Hosting: Increasing IT's Business Impact Through Lower TCO and Greater Agility2007-08-01 BEA Systems
This paper explores the business drivers and key success factors for many of the migration projects. It also presents proven transformation architecture for re-hosting legacy applications and data, describes SOA integration options and considerations when SOA-enabling re-hosted applications, explains project methodology for risk mitigation and automated tools that support it, and provides a foundation for the financial analysis and an ROI model derived from over a hundred mainframe re-hosting projects.

whitepaper MIPS Management at Mainframe Organizations2007-08-01 CompuWare
In May/June 2007, Computerworld invited IT leaders involved in mainframe decisions to participate in a survey on MIPS usage and management. The survey was fielded via targeted broadcasts to Computerworld customers, as well as through an invitation on Computerworld.com. The goal of the survey was to better understand MIPS usage and management within mainframe organizations today. The survey was commissioned by Compuware, but data was gathered and tabulated independently by Computerworld Research. The following report represents top-line results of the survey and is meant to serve as a brief benchmarking tool for mainframe IT leaders seeking information about how their peers are addressing MIPS management within their IT organizations.
whitepaper IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series Bulk Volume Information Retrieval Function User's Guide Version 1.32007-08-01 IBM
The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series is the latest in the line of tape virtualization products that has revolutionized the way mainframe customers utilize their tape resources. As the capability of tape virtualization has grown, so has the need to efficiently manage the large number of logical volumes the system supports. Internal to the TS7700 Virtualization Engine, a large amount of information is captured and maintained about the state and operational aspects of the resources within the TS7700 Virtualization Engine. This paper describes the use of a facility of the TS7700 Virtualization Engine through which a z/OS application can obtain that information.

whitepaper IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series z/OS Host Command Line Request User's Guide Version 1.02007-08-01 IBM
The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series is the latest in the line of tape virtualization products that has revolutionized the way mainframe customers utilize their tape resources. Tape virtualization subsystems have become an essential part of most mainframe customer's operations. The IBM TS7700 Virtualization Engine, with its virtual tape drives, disk cache and integrated hierarchical storage management, is designed to perform its tasks will no customer involvement once it has been configured. This paper describes a facility of the TS7700 that supports a new z/OS Library Request host console command to allow an operator to request information pertaining to the current operational state of the TS7700, its logical and physical volumes and its physical resources.
