whitepaper DB2 UDB for z/OS: SQL Performance Tuning2006-11-08 01:00:18 BMC Software
This white paper provides SQL tuning strategies for DB2 UDB for z/OS. Performance tuning of DB2 UDB for z/OS subsystems has been a common task since the announcement of that database subsystem by IBM. Performance tuning can be accomplished at the subsystem level or at the SQL statement level. It is generally accepted that 20% of the benefit from tuning can be accomplished at the subsystem level, and 80% of the benefit will be derived by tuning at the SQL statement level. The paper discusses performance tuning at the SQL statement level.
whitepaper Managing Convergence for Enhanced Customer Service2006-08-30 Sun Microsystems
Entenial Direct had first to deliver a single platform for customers combining mortgages and traditional banking activities across the company's web site, call centres and network of branches, and at the same time offer main partners a flexible front-end solution. To enable this Entenial required an open, flexible and scalable process-driven integration platform capable of satisfying their complex requirements. Entenial decided to develop a single pilot that could be taken forwards into production. These included partners, CRM systems, a repayment mortgage application hosted on an IBM OS/390 and more. The pilot was performed in three months validating the capabilities and benefits of the SeeBeyond integration solution. SeeBeyond manages 140 complex process flows with a throughput of 1.4m transactions per day.

whitepaper BMC Performance Assurance Suite for Mainframes: Capacity Management and the CDB2006-11-08 01:00:18 BMC Software
A successful capacity management strategy puts the resources in place to deliver just-in-time support of business requirements. Integral to that strategy is the development of a capacity plan that is based on the data from a Capacity Management Database (CDB). According to the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), the CDB is the cornerstone of a successful capacity management process when it operates as a subset of a Configuration Management DataBase (CMDB). This white paper illustrates how solutions in the BMC Performance Assurance Suite for Mainframes fulfill the ITIL capacity management best practices. The paper addresses the outputs of the CDB and how they are used in a business solution scenario.
whitepaper Parallel Sysplex Performance: XCF Performance Considerations (Version 3.1)2006-07-21 IBM
Some installations implementing parallel sysplex have seen performance issues due to XCF signaling. These performance issues are generally solved by tuning changes to the XCF transport class definitions, buffer definitions, and signaling paths. This paper is intended to review recommended XCF configurations and known performance tuning options. XCF signaling is used to communicate between various members of a sysplex. The user of XCF signaling usually an MVS component or a subsystem, issue messages to members within the user's group. The content and/or use of these messages are unique to the members of the group.
whitepaper Fibre Channel Protocol for Linux and z/VM on IBM System z2006-07-01 IBM
This paper discusses Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) concepts and explains some major hardware and software requirements. The Fibre Channel (FC) standard was developed by the National Committee of Information Technology Standards (NCITS). The System z FCP I/O architecture conforms to the FC standards specified by the NCITS. System z FCP support enables z/VM and Linux running on System z to access industry-standard SCSI devices.
whitepaper Why the NeoSort World Record Is Good News for Mainframe Users2006-11-08 01:00:18 Microsoft
On February 7, 2006, Ordinal Technology and Fujitsu set a new world record for the MinuteSort benchmark in the "Daytona," or commercial program, category using the NeoSort sort program. NeoSort read 40 gigabytes of data (400 million 100-byte records) in less than one minute. The sort ran on Fujitsu PRIMEQUEST computers using Fujitsu ETERNUS storage subsystems - hardware that costs a fraction of the cost of today's mainframe systems. Given the very real challenge of mainframe batch jobs approaching or exceeding the limits of available batch windows, this benchmark proves that companies now have a choice outside of expensive mainframe upgrades. This paper details how the benchmark was performed and more importantly, how this technology can reduce costs and speed batch processing.
whitepaper Sales Soar With Revamp of Online Gift Registry at Boscov's Department Store2006-07-01 IBM
Boscov's, Inc., is the largest full-line family - owned independent department store in the United States, with annual sales of about $1.1 billion. The challenge was to boost online usage of the gift-registry business at a 40-location regional department store chain Improvements were delivered by a solution from IBM and MarCole Interactive Systems, an IBM Business Partner. The essential ingredients were IBM middleware - including IBM WebSphere Commerce Enterprise, IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS, IBM DB2 Universal Database for z/OS - and the flagship product of MarCole, Gift RegistryWorks Enterprise Edition.

whitepaper Taming Complex Transaction Management: System Management in a Rapidly Changing World2006-11-08 01:00:18 BMC Software
Web front-ends on legacy applications and databases have changed system-monitoring requirements. The level of complexity also changes the meaning of monitoring and managing response times. Applications today are complex, and it can be challenging to determine what went wrong when something fails. Pinpointing problems is difficult, if not impossible, in applications that span multiple subsystems. This paper defines the complexities of managing transactions and the requirements for effective transaction management on the mainframe.
whitepaper Encryption Facility for z/OS - Performance and Sizing2006-06-23 IBM
This paper will discuss the factors that may affect performance of the Encryption Facility for z/OS tool, and provide assistance in estimating resource requirements. The document covers both the Encryption Services feature and the DFSMSdss feature of the product. Although the two are functionally identical, the control statement parameters are different, and the performance characteristics are different. Capacity and performance expectations for the IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS depend on a number of factors. As with all encryption, the choice of algorithm and whether that algorithm is supported by hardware is the significant consideration.

whitepaper Managing IT Performance and Availability from an End-User Perspective2006-11-09 11:31:34 BMC Software
As companies mature their IT operations, they know more about the performance of their networks, applications, servers, databases, and mainframe systems. However, reliable information about end-user experience remains elusive. This white paper, from BMC® Software, discusses how to add measurable value to the business by detecting the problems experienced by end users, isolating those problems, diagnosing the root causes, and then fixing the problems.
