whitepaper Embracing SOA for the Legacy World: Architectural Strategies to Give Your Mainframes and Legacy Applications a New Lease on Life2006-06-13 IBM
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is becoming widely accepted, but there are gaps in the industry's approach, level of experience, and understanding of how to apply SOA to enterprise IT environments. Explore ways to stretch the return on IT investment of legacy platforms, such as mainframes, by using SOA-based technologies to expose critical business functions as business services. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is one of those technologies that has been lying quiet and untapped for more than 20 years. But since the advent and subsequent adoption of Web services, SOA has been given a new lease on life.

whitepaper IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller Performance Whitepaper2006-06-01 IBM
The purpose of this white paper is to examine the performance of the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller (TS1120 controller) in an IBM System z environment. This paper is intended to illustrate the potential performance of the TS1120 tape drives and TS1120 controller in relation to the IBM 3592 Model J1A tape drives and 3592 Model J70 controller.

whitepaper Unlocking the Mainframe: Modernizing Legacy Systems to a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)2006-05-03 BEA Systems
Before delving into this analysis, it is important to ensure a common understanding of the key terms used here. Wikipedia defines a legacy system as an existing computer system or application program that continues to be used because the user (typically an organization) does not want to replace or redesign it. This definition is fairly broad - applying to a number of different computer systems. It can also refer to a system that is out of date or difficult to replace, due to the high cost or risk associated with doing so. For the better part of the last 40 years, enterprises have chosen to host their most mission-critical applications on the most thoroughly proven legacy computing environment available, the mainframe.

whitepaper How to Access DB2 for z/OS Data From the IBM Tivoli Enterprise Portal2006-05-01 IBM
The IBM Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server (TEPS) is a component of both IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.1 and the OMEGAMON XE/DE products on z/OS. It provides status, availability and performance data from a variety of sources. Either the Tivoli Enterprise Portal client or the Internet Explorer web browser can access the TEPS to display and/or act upon various aspects of the operational environment, with workspaces and views showing information from operating systems, middleware, and applications for both z/OS and distributed environments. Commands, either manual or automated, can be invoked against monitored resources from the TEPS.

whitepaper IBM TotalStorage Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server Failover Test Scenarios in a zOS Environment2006-03-29 IBM
The IBM TotalStorage Peer-to-Peer (PtP) Virtual Tape Server is designed so that no single component failure will result in loss of access to data. In addition, data access is also preserved during many multiple component failure situations. The complexity of the PtP VTS configuration, coupled with the large number of possible failure scenarios, has made the task of developing failover test plans a challenging one. This paper was written in an effort to assist IBM Specialists and customers in developing such plans. The paper documents a series of PtP VTS failover testing scenarios for zOS which were run in an IBM laboratory environment. Single failures of all major components and communication links and some multiple failures are simulated.

whitepaper DB2 Data Replication Using BMC Software Technologies2006-11-08 01:00:18 BMC Software
Customers often need to replicate data from one DB2 z/OS subsystem to another DB2 system or RDBMS. They may want to update a QA environment with a copy of production data, or replicate or propagate data changes to a data warehouse. Because replication frequently is done at an application or object level, granularity and flexibility in the extract process is important. Solutions aimed at capturing all transactions and replicating them to another site for disaster recovery failover do not address this challenge. BMC Software offers several techniques to help replicate data from a DB2 z/OS source to a target system (usually also a DB2 z/OS system, but not always).
whitepaper IBM Tivoli and Consul: Facilitating Security Audit and Compliance for Heterogeneous Environments2006-03-01 IBM
Security and compliance challenges are greater than ever because of increased regulatory requirements and costs of compliance failures, increased complexity in technologies and IT environments, and a lack of predictability and visibility across infrastructures. To help address these challenges, IBM continues to expand its security management portfolio through development and acquisitions. One such acquisition is Consul risk management international, B.V., a recognized leader in policy-based security audit and compliance. Designed for both distributed and mainframe environments, Consul products provide capabilities that combine with the IBM Tivoli security management portfolio to help organizations.

whitepaper Best Practices for WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation on z/OS2006-04-04 03:00:34
The paper provides information about how to install and configure WBISF on z/OS, V5.1 for high performance applications. It provides best practices and guidelines for creating and deploying business processes. While this paper cannot cover all the options of an install, the overall best practices should be apparent. Because WebSphere is a program product undergoing rapid enhancements, efforts are taken not to limit its function or scalability. The paper is designed to provide a working solution, not a nebulous "what if" discussion.
whitepaper Configuring SNAplus2 for Enterprise Extender2007-01-03 02:13:55 Hewlett-Packard
The HP-UX SNAPlus2 family of products has been enhanced with a new release (Release 7) running on HP-UX versions 11i v1 and 11i v2. Among several new features, SNAPlus2 Release 7 offers Enterprise Extender (EE) Links. SNAplus2 Enterprise Extender, also known as High Performance Routing over IP (HPR over IP), provides a standard base method to efficiently transport SNAplus2 data across an IP network. It allows customers to leverage their common TCP/IP infrastructure, simplifying network infrastructure while reducing costs. It improves performance, availability and reliability of SNAplus2 network infrastructures. The purpose of this paper is to assist Mainframe Programmers and SNAPlus2 administrators in configuring HPR over IP links.
whitepaper Mainframes and GIS: A New ESRI Solution on IBM zSeries Using Linux2006-03-23 05:19:25
IBM and ESRI are leading the development of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) solutions away from a specialized departmental technology into a more comprehensive enterprise-wide platform. Enterprise GIS now contains all the reliability, manageability, and performance requirements demanded by Enterprise Information Technology solutions. Customer demand encouraged IBM and ESRI to expand GIS enterprise solutions to use mainframe database repositories for spatial information and analysis. Therefore, IBM undertook a study at the IBM eServer zSeries Benchmark Center in Poughkeepsie, NY to determine how to utilize the zSeries platform in the ESRI GIS solution.
