Overview

The live migration feature of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V greatly increases the flexibility of Hyper-V. The ability to move running VMs between Hyper-V physical hosts with no downtime for users not only makes it easier to maintain physical host, it also opens up new possibilities for dynamically scaling server resources to efficiently meet changing demands. Live migration makes it possible to perform maintenance on Hyper-V servers without scheduling a maintenance window for running VMs. When demand on a VM changes, one can migrate it to a more powerful server with no downtime, or if demand has decreased one can migrate it to a server where the consolidation ratio is higher to conserve electricity usage.
