whitepaper Reducing the Complexity of Sub-Band ADPCM Coding to Enable High-Quality Audio Streaming From Mobile Devices2009-09-29 APTX
The number of consumer audio applications demanding high quality audio compression and communication across wireless networks continues to grow. Although the consumer is increasingly demanding higher audio quality, devices such as portable media players and wireless headsets also demand low computational complexity, low power dissipation and practical transmission bit-rates to help conserve battery life. This paper discusses research undertaken to lower the complexity of existing high-quality sub-band ADPCM coding schemes to better satisfy these conflicting criteria.

whitepaper Quality of Multimedia Streaming-Oriented Handover Management Solution for Mobile Applications2009-08-27 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Mobility has become a mandatory feature of the future Internet as mobile computing gains increasing popularity among Internet users. The rapidly evolving heterogeneous wireless environment provides a variety of communication resources for the mobile host. In order to fully benefit of these wireless access networks an efficient and quality oriented mobility management system has to be employed. This paper presents an innovative solution for handover management based on an estimation of multimedia streaming quality which considers both quality of service and user quality of experience in the decision making process. The proposed solution aims at improving the user perceived quality in the context of mobile multimedia streaming by efficiently exploiting all the communication resources available to the mobile host.

whitepaper Granules: A Lightweight, Streaming Runtime for Cloud Computing With Support for Map-Reduce2009-08-08 Indiana University
Cloud computing has gained significant traction in recent years. The Map-Reduce framework is currently the most dominant programming model in cloud computing settings. This paper describes Granules, a lightweight, streaming-based runtime for cloud computing which incorporates support for the Map-Reduce framework. Granules provides rich lifecycle support for developing scientific applications with support for iterative, periodic and data driven semantics for individual computations and pipelines. The paper describes the support for variants of the Map-Reduce framework. The paper presents a survey of related work in this area. Finally, this paper describes the performance evaluation of various aspects of the system, including (where possible) comparisons with other comparable systems.

whitepaper TANDBERG's Native Resolution: What It Does and Why It's the Clear Solution2009-06-18 Tandberg
When the pioneers of videoconferencing were developing the first systems back in the mid 1980's, the proposition seemed easy enough: take existing television cameras and monitors and use them to enable a 2-way interactive conference. Right? Well, not so fast. The problem is videoconferencing becomes a powerful solution only if it can be used to call anywhere on the globe - and there are two major, incompatible standards to which video equipment are manufactured: NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Alternation by Line). OK, there's also SECAM (Systeme Electronique Couleur Avec Memoire), but the resolution of SECAM is equal to that of PAL, and SECAM's popularity is fading. Incompatible standards means that the video from an NTSC camera cannot be displayed on a monitor designed for PAL and vice-versa.
