whitepaper Media Streaming Performance in a Portable Wireless Classroom Network2006-05-10 01:00:28 University of Calgary
This paper presents empirical measurements of wireless media streaming traffic in an IEEE 802.11b wireless ad hoc network. The results show that the IEEE 802.11b WLAN can support up to 8 clients with good media streaming quality, with each client receiving a separate 400 kbps video stream and 128 kbps audio stream. With 9 clients, the WLAN is overloaded, and performance degrades for all clients. Finally, the paper demonstrates a "Bad apple" phenomenon in wireless ad hoc networks, wherein a single client with poor wireless connectivity disrupts the media streaming quality for all clients sharing the WLAN.
whitepaper A Measurement Study of RealMedia Streaming Traffic2006-05-10 01:00:28 University of Calgary
With the growing popularity of real-time audio/video streaming applications on the Internet, it is important to study the traffic characteristics of such applications and to understand their implications on network performance. This paper presents a measurement study of RealMedia streaming traffic, where the focus is both on the application-layer view (i.e., the output of the audio/video encoder) and on the network-layer view (i.e., the departure process for network packets emanating from the RealMedia server). The main observation is that, although RealVideo can be compressed as Variable-Bit-Rate (VBR) at the application layer, it is often streamed as Constant-Bit-Rate (CBR) at the network layer.
whitepaper Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Technology2006-10-27 01:00:16 Hitachi
An exciting new magnetic recording technology has been introduced into hard drive storage. Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) offers the customer higher capacities, improved reliability and robustness, and a very positive outlook for future growth in capacity and performance. Through the efforts of a company-wide taskforce, Hitachi's first PMR drive, Travelstar 5K160, achieves best-of-breed performance and quality and is well positioned to ramp seamlessly to high volume production. Drive development incorporated a yearlong field test that successfully demonstrated the viability of Hitachi's advanced design. Core technologies include second-generation trailing-shield heads and advanced granular Cobalt-Chromium-Platinum (CoCrPt) oxide media.
whitepaper Revisiting Multimedia Streaming in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks2006-04-24 Association for Computing Machinery
Mobile ad hoc networks have been the subject of active research for a number of years. This paper investigates the feasibility of using such networks for transmitting multimedia streams. The paper observes that wireless network IO operations can be expensive (e.g., programmed IO cost, energy to operate wireless). Moreover, compared to nodes in infrastructure networks that either read or write network traffic, ad hoc traffic requires the intermediate node to perform many expensive network operations twice (read and then resend) and on behalf of other nodes.

whitepaper Spatio-Temporal Video Transcoder for Streaming Over Mobile Communications Networks2006-06-21 01:00:37 Korea University
Video transcoding technique is an efficient mechanism to deliver visual contents to a variety of users who have different network conditions or terminal devices with different display capabilities. This paper proposes two types of transcoding methods for adapting the bitrate of streaming video to the bandwidth of the transmission channel; Spatial Resolution Reduction (SRR) transcoding and Temporal Resolution Reduction (TRR) transcoding. The two transcoding methods are alternatively operated according to the requirements of users. Experimental results show that the proposed transcoding methods can preserve image quality while transcoding to the low bitrate.
whitepaper Fewer Is Better: Hard Drives for Digital Video Security2006-04-01 Seagate Technology
The video security market is experiencing phenomenal growth, due in large part to the powerful new capabilities delivered by digital video surveillance solutions. Enabling a new generation of sophisticated security software, these digital disc drive-based systems provide a combination of performance, flexibility and power management that legacy analog tape-based systems simply cannot match. With post-9/11 security concerns clearly playing a prominent role in daily life, improved video surveillance has become an urgent priority for both the public and private sector. Whether in airports and federal government buildings, or in banks, office buildings and factories, video security systems are an essential tool in the battle to fight crime and keep people safe.

whitepaper How to (Accurately) Skip Past Streams2006-03-23 Sprint
For processing massive data streams, most proposed algorithmic methods look at each new item, perform a small number of operations while keeping a small amount of memory, and still perform much-needed analyses on streams. However, in many situations, the update speed per item is very critical and not every stream item can be extensively examined. In practice, this has been addressed by sampling only a subset of items (say 1 in N) from the input, but it results in loss of guarantees on the accuracy of the post-hoc analyses. This paper presents a technique of skipping past streams.

whitepaper Why Was the HP StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array Able to Take the Bullet and Keep Running? White Paper2006-05-02 05:15:49
This white paper describes the features of the HP StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array that enabled it to be shot and keep operating. The paper describes how the XP12000 Disk Array was able to sustain multiple catastrophic failures induced by an external force (the bullet) and continue delivering data services to the streaming video server. In addition, the array was returned to full redundant functionality using standard repair procedures. The array that HP displays today is the array that was shot and has been repaired so it now provides the same redundancy as any similar configured XP12000 Disk Array. In short, it could be shot again and perform as demonstrated in the video clip.
