Security Engineering and Open Source Software Development | 2008-01-27 | Freie Universitat Berlin |
| Open source projects usually do not define tasks and workflows explicitly in contrast to the closed source software business. However, this does not mean that security related quality assurance and maintenance does not happen. The paper wants to make open source software more secure by learning how secure systems are being built in an open source development process. This position paper reflects the ongoing empirical research and expected results on security engineering and free/open source software development at the research group Software Engineering at Freie Universitat Berlin.

A Game Theoretic Framework for SLA Negotiation | 2008-01-25 | Hewlett-Packard |
| An SLA/Contract is an agreement between a client and a service provider. It specifies desired levels of service and penalties in case of violations. The objective of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the negotiation process before an agreement is reached. The model will be based on Game Theory models of signaling games. The idea is to try to capture the bargaining process that occurs when clients are offered not just a take-it-or-leave-it contract but also the opportunity for them to express their preferences via a counteroffer. Of course, many times this counteroffer does not meet the service provider preferences and that's how the bargaining begins.

IBM Rational Architecture Management Software Model Structure Guidelines: Part 2. Classic Rational Unified Process | 2008-01-22 | IBM |
| This paper is for those who are interested in applying the modeling guidance found in the traditional IBM Rational Unified Process (RUP) to their use of IBM Rational Software Modeler, IBM Rational Systems Developer, or IBM Rational Software Architect. This paper explains how these products support the model types defined by RUP; the implications of RUP modeling style for model organization and team modeling; what is worth modeling; and the business value, organization, and content of the RUP Use Case, Analysis, and Design Models.

Testing for SOA and the tools available in the market | 2008-01-31 | ITC Infotech |
| Service Oriented Architectures become more important each year as large enterprises leverage them to integrate wide arrays of disparate systems into a cohesive whole. SOA can reduce the cost, risk, and difficulty of replacing legacy systems, acquiring new businesses, or even extending the life of existing systems. SOA makes it easier for a large enterprise to support the broad technology base present in most enterprises, to deploy new applications, and ultimately to respond quickly to the rapidly evolving challenge of competing on the open market.
Testing a Service Oriented Architecture is an interesting and difficult challenge, requiring a solid understanding of the SOA design and underlying technology, the functional purpose of the SOA, and testing tools and techniques. View this on-demand Webcast, in which experts Michael D. Kelly and David Christiansen introduce the challenge of Testing a Service Oriented Architecture, and cover the following topics:

IT Manager Webcast: Application Platform: Branching and Merging: Which Approach Is Right for You (Level 200) | 2008-01-17 | Microsoft Tips |
| Software Configuration Management (SCM) is often one of the first areas implemented in an application Life cycle Management (ALM) road map. It has the potential to build tremendous support for the vision, or cause significant heartache if not implemented well. The secret to success is to take the opportunity to step back and critically examine the business objectives behind the SCM, and then build a process that is customized to the business. This webcast provides a high-level understanding of the different approaches that can be taken for branching and merging.

Intel Debugger 10.x | 2008-01-11 | Intel |
| The Intel Debugger is a component of the Intel compilers. It is a full-featured symbolic source-code application debugger that helps programmers locates run-time programming errors (i.e., incorrect code, memory leaks, stack overflows, unexpected exceptions or other algorithmic problems) in their code. The Intel Debugger can debug both single and multi-threaded applications as well as both serial and parallel applications. In addition, it provides extensive debugging support for the following languages: C, C++, and Fortran (including later standards). It also provides a choice of control from the command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). This white paper gives a high-level overview of Intel Debugger 10.x targeted primarily towards technical decision makers.

An International Airline Reduces Costs of Aircraft Parking and Engine Maintenance Through Smarter Scheduling | 2008-01-01 | IBM |
| The airline wanted to reduce costs by making the processes of assigning aircraft to parking slots and scheduling engine maintenance more efficient. IBM built a user-friendly application that contains advanced mathematical models and algorithms that find the optimal solution for parking any set of aircraft over a specific period of time. The application considers the many complex variables involved in scheduling aircraft parking in less than three minutes and can be manually adjusted using a graphical interface. IBM developed an engine management application that reduced scheduling time for 30 engines to one hour and helped reduce operational and rule violation costs by 30%. In addition, the parking scheduling application helped reduce outsourcing costs by 30%.

IBM Case Study: The City of Stockholm | 2008-01-01 | IBM |
| Stockholm wanted to reduce both the number of traffic jams in the city and the municipality's air pollution levels. Road-use charging systems must demonstrate a high degree of accuracy. An inefficient system costs the city funds it would otherwise have earned from tolls. Incorrect billings also cause bad feelings among residents. Understanding this, the IBM Global Business Services team called upon IBM Research to help boost the accuracy of the automated license plate recognition system. IBM researchers delivered an OCR engine that significantly increased the number of license plates automatically identified in good weather - with still greater improvement anticipated during bad weather. This translates directly to a significant reduction in manual data entry costs. |
