Modified Logistic Regression: An Approximation to SVM and Its Applications in Large-Scale Text Categorization | 2007-12-01 | Carnegie Mellon University |
| Logistic Regression (LR) has been widely used in statistics for many years, and has received extensive study in machine learning community recently due to its close relations to Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Ad-a-Boost. This paper uses a modified version of LR to approximate the optimization of SVM by a sequence of unconstrained optimization problems. The paper proves that the approximation will converge to SVM, and propose an iterative algorithm called "MLR-CG" which uses Conjugate Gradient as its inner loop. Multiclass version "MMLR-CG" is also obtained after simple modifications.

Add Support for the Scroll Wheel to the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications 6 Environment | 2007-12-01 | Microsoft Tips |
| When the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) 6 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) - also referred to as the Visual Basic Editor - is used to add or edit a macro or module in the Microsoft Office 2003 program, the scroll wheel on the mouse might not function. That's because VBA is based on the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 IDE, which does not include built-in support for the scroll wheel. This paper provides the technique to add support for the scroll wheel to VBA 6.

Non-Parametric Seismic Data Recovery With Curvelet Frames | 2007-11-30 | University of British Columbia |
| Seismic data recovery from data with missing traces on otherwise regular acquisition grids forms a crucial step in the seismic processing flow. For instance, unsuccessful recovery leads to imaging artifacts and to erroneous predictions for the multiples, adversely affecting the performance of multiple elimination. A non-parametric transform-based recovery method is presented that exploits the compression of seismic data volumes by recently developed curvelet frames. The elements of this transform are multidimensional and directional and locally resemble wavefronts present in the data, which leads to a compressible representation for seismic data. This compression enables to formulate a new curvelet-based seismic data recovery algorithm through sparsity-promoting inversion.

Microsoft Online Services Customer Story: Burger King | 2007-11-17 | Microsoft Tips |
| Equity Marketing, promotions agency for Burger King, approached Microsoft to produce three Burger King-branded Xbox games to sell exclusively at company locations in North America for only $3.99 each - a fraction of the typical cost of a retail game - and do it all in less than a year. In addition, they were hoping to create an experience that would be compelling for the notoriously suspicious gamer audience, while including a strong marketing push for Burger King's brand and products. To the delight of everyone on the team, the finished products were even greater than the sum of their parts - robust, retail-level games with terrific gameplay, rich scenarios and environments, and one of the oddest takes ever on a corporate icon. | |||

Project Kittyhawk: Building a Global-Scale Computer | 2007-11-13 | IBM |
| This paper describes Project Kittyhawk, an undertaking at IBM Research to explore the construction of a next-generation platform capable of hosting many simultaneous web-scale workloads. The paper hypothesize that for a large class of web-scale workloads the Blue Gene/P platform is an order of magnitude more efficient to purchase and operate than the commodity clusters in use today. Driven by scientific computing demands the Blue Gene designers pursued an aggressive system-on-a-chip methodology that led to a scalable platform composed of air-cooled racks. Each rack contains more than a thousand independent computers with high-speed interconnects inside and between racks. The paper postulates that the same demands of efficiency and density apply to web-scale platforms.
