A Component Framework for Building Web Science Gateways and Portals | 2008-03-01 | Indiana University |
| Portlet-based Grid portals have become a crucial part of the international distributed computing infrastructure to support computational science ("Cyberinfrastructure") provide component-based problem solving environments for scientists. Although Web portals are intended to provide user-friendly environments with easy-to-use interfaces, the development of portals and their portlet components is time consuming. This paper aims to address this problem by providing reusable components for rapid portlet development. This approach, Grid Tag Libraries and Beans (GTLAB), encapsulates common Grid operations with reusable XML tags, providing a dramatically simplified programming interface to common cyberinfrastructure services. GTLAB also provides a way for creating composite tasks that models the requirements of computational science portals.

Building BI Dashboards With Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Discoverer, and Oracle Portal | 2006-10-13 01:00:15 | Oracle |
| Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards bring together reports and graphs from several data sources and present information to users in a simple-to-understand, unified manner. The demand for BI dashboards from the user community has therefore led to numerous new features and improvements in Oracle's business intelligence tools, and the simplified creation of BI dashboards is one of the key new features of Oracle Business Intelligence 10g. This paper explains the features of a BI dashboard, discusses the benefits to users, and steps through the creation of a dashboard with Oracle Database 10g; Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer (Oracle Discoverer), a component of Oracle Business Intelligence 10g; and Oracle Portal. | |||

Building Open-Standard Portlets for Location Information | 2006-10-13 01:00:15 | Oracle |
| As integration technologies such as portals and intelligence data become critical pieces of the business infrastructure, being able to share the information used and the applications (portlets) build becomes utterly essential (if not legally required). Now a days people not only have all the ingredients needed for creating new applications that adhere to open standards but also have framework standards, such as OASIS Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) and Java Specification Request 168 (JSR 168), that make it possible to integrate existing technologies and data into new applications. | |||

High Quality and Open Source Software Practices | 2006-09-15 01:00:16 | Carnegie Mellon University |
| Surveys suggest that, according to various metrics, the quality and dependability of today's open source software is roughly on par with commercial and government developed software. What are the prospects for advancing to much higher levels of quality in open source software? More specifically, what attributes must be possessed by quality-related interventions for them to be feasibly adoptable in open source practice? In order to identify some of these attributes, the authors conducted a preliminary survey of the quality practices of a number of successful open source projects. This paper focuses, in particular, on attributes related to adoptability by the open source practitioner community. | |||
