whitepaper University Web Portals Quality Assurance: User Perspective2008-06-18 IT University of Goteborg
Looking at IS services is quite vast. Anything that has to do with technology is basically an IS service. Web portals are one of the largest, considering that anyone who uses the internet pretty much uses web portals. Since the explosion of the internet, web portals and their uses have become more advanced and complex. Web portals are a major source of obtaining information over the internet. It is easier and faster than looking up information in a "Real" library. One of the issues with this highly accessible information source is that the content isn't always correct and not always all that easy to use. "Fitness for use" is a highly referred to term explaining the quality of web portals.

whitepaper A Semantic Search Engine for Spatial Web Portals2008-05-30 George Mason University
Spatial Web Portals, such as NASA's Earth Science Gateway (ESG, esg.gsfc.nasa.gov) and ESIP's Earth Information Exchange (EIE, eie.esipfed.org) have improved the sharing, exchanging, and interoperating of Earth science information. Large amount of geospatial metadata, data, and web services have been collected for SWPs to serve different user communities. However, most search engines in SWPs are based on keyword matching, which does not 'Understand' the meaning of user's queries and is not friendly to end users, especially when a user has limited Earth science knowledge. Therefore, it is a challenge to find needed data from a variety of geospatial resources in an intelligent manner. This paper introduces the efforts on integrating semantic search engine to make the search intelligent.

whitepaper Manufacturer Improves Content Management, Collaboration, Search - And Customer Satisfaction2008-05-01 Microsoft
Exterran - a service and equipment provider to the oil and gas industries, formed from the merger of Hanover and Universal - had an enterprise portal, but employees shied away from it because it was difficult and time-consuming to use. This resistance affected global collaboration and was a potential roadblock to the company achieving its growth targets. To boost collaboration, Exterran worked with Infosys Technologies, a Microsoft Global Systems Integration Alliance Partner, to create a more usable portal based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and complemented with other Microsoft communications technologies. Employees find the new portal to be faster, easier, and more effective to use. Document uploads are faster, too, saving hours on major projects.

whitepaper Fujitsu Case Study: UKAEA2008-05-01 Fujitsu
The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) uses, handles and stores a wide range of radioactive materials as part of its role in restoring the environment of nuclear sites. Users or support staff were often experts of their own systems, but couldn't understand or maintain others in the UK industry, so 'Comparing notes' was proving unnecessarily difficult. UKAEA approached Fujitsu at this time with no major plan, just a problem that needed solving. Fujitsu chose a combination of Microsoft and Oracle systems with web portal technology to make this possible, i.e. to successfully design and implement a package to process, update and report on nuclear and radioactive materials throughout the supply chain.
