A Comparison of J2EE and .NET as Platforms for Teaching Web Services | 2008-10-23 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| .NET and J2EE are the two leading technologies in enterprise-level application development. They are also the platforms of choice for developing Web services. This paper compare the two platforms using parameters such as features present in each platform, tools and resources offered by the two and compatibility with the rest of the curriculum. .NET offers integrated, native support for various phases of Web services development, while the Java platform achieves this with several new libraries. The paper compare the Web-services development process in IBM's Websphere (for J2EE) and Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET and find them remarkably similar.

Experiments on Element and Document Statistics for XML Retrieval | 2008-10-08 | World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology |
| This paper presents an information retrieval model on XML documents based on tree matching. Queries and documents are represented by extended trees. An extended tree is built starting from the original tree, with additional weighted virtual links between each node and its indirect descendants allowing to directly reach each descendant. Therefore only one level separates between each node and its indirect descendants. This allows to compare the user query and the document with flexibility and with respect to the structural constraints of the query. The content of each node is very important to decide whether a document element is relevant or not, thus the content should be taken into account in the retrieval process.

Intel XML Software Suite 1.1 Performance Brief: Accelerating the Critical Functions in XML Processing | 2008-09-10 | Intel |
| Today's applications rely on data feeds from many sources, using SOAP, REST, RSS and others which all are based on the use of XML. Efficient XML processing is the cornerstone of almost every Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) deployment, regardless of the programming language or data center environment. This paper provides comparisons to other popular XML processors, using the following common XML functions: Extensible Stylesheet Language Transform (XSLT) processing, XML Path language processing, DOM/SAX parsing and XML schema validation processing.

Developing an Open Source Strategy to Accelerate Software Development | 2008-08-30 | Black Duck Software |
Open Source software can accelerate software development and cut costs. Today there are billions of lines of open source freely available for download off the Internet, and developers are especially good at finding code to reuse. Then, again, unmanaged open source can introduce issues and business risks. Some open source licenses impose legal obligations on users and developers must be ready to address concerns such as:

State of the Semantic Web: Know Where to Look | 2008-08-27 | JupiterMedia |
| There is no question that the web is an unprecedented success. It is the single most adventurous and useful platform for information exchange ever conceived and built. The architectural choices that went into its design have lent it scalability, flexibility, and the ability to grow into new business models, application-level technologies, and varied uses. Currently, the web is designed for use by people; and not by software. Visitors to a site such as Amazon - that provides book and movie ratings, information about available used copies, related products, and so forth - can easily parse the content visually. It is much more difficult for software to act on a visitor's behalf, because the information is tied up in the presentation structure.

Java/JRuby Developers, Say Open 'Sesame' to the Semantic Web | 2008-08-22 | JupiterMedia |
| The core concept of the semantic web is integrating and using data from different sources. Using semantic web technologies such as RDF/RDFS and the SPARQL query language to integrate and use data from disparate sources has some advantages over using a standard relational database. The Resource Description Framework (RDF) uses predicates to define relationships between data objects, and RDF Schema (RDFS), which is written in RDF, offers a modeling language for knowledge representation and ontology development. Used together, these technologies enable the user to use information from disparate sources in different formats/schemas without having to convert the data to a "Standard format" - as one would with a relational database.
