Avis Budget Group, Inc. Improves Customer Experience With Service-Oriented Architecture | 2008-08-01 | Oracle |
| Avis Budget Group, Inc. is one of the world leaders in vehicle rental services, reflecting the company's commitment to service, innovation, and professionalism. To help ensure a positive and consistent customer experience and keep loyal renters coming back time and again, Avis Budget's technology team implemented a new SOA infrastructure in 2004 to support all customer contact channels - including call centers, airport rental counters, standalone facilities, and the internet. The infrastructure, known as One Merged Enterprise & Global Architecture (OMEGA), is a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) built on Oracle WebLogic Server (previously known as BEA WebLogic Server). Today, the OMEGA foundation enables Avis to seamlessly process more than 60,000 transactions daily.

The Social Enterprise: Using Social Enterprise Applications to Enable the Next Wave of Knowledge Worker Productivity | 2008-08-01 | Oracle |
| What can the enterprise learn from sites such as MySpace and Facebook? First is the notion that birds of a feather flock together. Communities of interest will quickly form without the need for top-down hand-holding. When people form their own groups, the connections are stronger and the interactions more frequent and long lasting. Second, with better tools, a faster rate of user adoption is evident. Enterprise users, spoiled by the ease of consumer software, don't want to perform complex installations, remember arcane passwords, or learn something new just to be able to share with their coworkers.

Cloud Computing With Amazon Web Services, Part 1: Introduction - When It's Smarter to Rent Than to Buy | 2008-07-29 | IBM |
| Cloud computing can be loosely defined as using scalable computing resources provided as a service from outside the environment on a pay-per-use basis. One uses only what one needs, and pay for only what one uses. One can access any of the resources that live in the "Cloud" at any time, and from anywhere across the Internet. One doesn't have to care about how things are being maintained behind the scenes in the cloud. The cloud is responsible for being highly available and responsive to the needs of the application. Cloud computing has also been called utility computing, or grid computing.

Computing Semantic Similarity Using Ontologies | 2008-07-06 | Hewlett-Packard |
| Determining semantic similarity of two sets of words that describe two entities is an important problem in web mining (search and recommendation systems), targeted advertisement and domains that need semantic content matching. Traditional Information Retrieval approaches, even when extended to include semantics by performing the similarity comparison on concepts instead of words/terms, may not always determine the right matches when there is no direct overlap in the exact concepts that represent the semantics. As the entity descriptions are treated as self-contained units, the relationships that are not explicit in the entity descriptions are usually ignored. This notion of semantic similarity is extended to consider inherent relationships between concepts using ontologies.

SOA Meets Situational Applications, Part 3: Examples and Lessons Learned | 2008-07-03 | IBM |
| In this paper, one examines three SAs. These applications were selected to represent a wide variety of business challenges that SAs can be leveraged to solve. Some of these commonly occur across Lines Of Business (LOBs) and are of general interest. Others are LOB-specific, yet with typical challenges that can be successfully addressed by an SA. In addition to a business context, along with each examined application this paper describes the business challenge and an architectural overview of the resulting solution with the enabling technologies and tangible business results achieved by each.

NH Hoteles Reduces Response Times to Consultations on Room Availability and Prices to Five Seconds | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| NH Hoteles wanted to enable multi-channel, transparent management of reservations, including availability and pricing and reduce online response times for consultations on room availability and reservations. The challenge was to comply with service level agreements with travel agencies and provide coverage to online travel agencies, which have doubled their business volume with NH Hoteles over the last three years. As a solution NH Hoteles centralized applications with the implementation of Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle Business Activity Monitoring solutions, providing a platform that facilitates integration and interoperability with clients' systems and gained the ability to manage more than 3 million transactions per month, including those from 20,000 internal providers.

Learning Curve Journal, Part 4: Accessing a Web Service | 2008-07-01 | Sun Microsystems |
| This Learning Curve Journal series introduced a number of basic concepts and techniques to help one get started using the JavaFX Script programming language (shortened in this series to JavaFX Script). This paper demonstrates how to use JavaFX Script to access a web service. In doing that, it also showed how easy it is to access Java technology classes, such as Swing classes, from JavaFX Script. One also saw in this series how features such as code completion simplify building and running JavaFX applications in NetBeans IDE 6.1. One can also build and run a JavaFX application from the command line using the JavaFX Preview SDK.
