White Paper: Six Critical IT Operations Questions for a Successful SOA Deployment | 2007-07-01 | IBM |
| There's a lot of talk about service-oriented architecture (SOA). Organizations eagerly anticipate the increased development flexibility it can bring as well as its promise to speed business innovation. Much less discussed is the importance of the IT operations department to SOA success. To fully capitalize on the value of SOA, IT operations must work with the enterprise SOA team to define standards that will ensure efficient implementation management and operation. This paper presents six questions IT operations should ask the enterprise architecture team before making the leap to a more dynamic, SOA-based environment.

SOA Middleware Starts Where Web Services Leave Off | 2007-07-01 | Aberdeen Group |
| Aberdeen analysis of approximately 400 companies over the past 18 months has shown a deep division between organizations that are deploying web services based applications, what one calls SOA Lite, and those that are building out full SOA middleware infrastructure. With two such different software investment profiles, one expects to see significantly different success. Organizations that are focusing on SOA infrastructure are outperforming those that are deploying only web services. They are realizing lower application lifecycle costs, better throughput for projects, and higher levels of user satisfaction.

ARQo: The Architecture for an ARQ Static Query Optimizer | 2007-06-26 | Hewlett-Packard |
| This paper describes the architecture of ARQo, a first approach for SPARQL static query optimization in ARQ. Specifically, the focus is on static optimization of BasicGraphPattern (BGP) for in-memory models. Static query optimization is intended as a query rewriting process where the set of triple patterns defined for a BGP are rewritten according to a specific order. This paper proposes a rewriting process according to the estimated execution cost of joined triple patterns in increasing order. Specifically, the estimated execution cost is a function of multiple parameters such as the estimated selectivity of joined triple patterns, the availability of indexes or pre-calculated result sets.

Army Medical Center Speeds Development 15 Percent, Gains Agility, Reduces Cost | 0000-00-00 | Microsoft |
| Madigan Army Medical Center (AMC) surveys tens of thousands of people each year, both to improve the health of its patient population and to assess the medical status of troops being deployed to Iraq. But the paper-based and proprietary online solutions it used were costly, inflexible, and time-consuming. After participating in a Microsoft architecture design session and enlisting the help of solution partners Abacus Technology and CTA, Madigan AMC developed a Microsoft .NET - connected solution, Hermes that enables users to create surveys quickly and easily, without having to write programming code. The solution uses Web services and the Microsoft .NET Framework so that it can work with low-cost, general-purpose devices such as kiosks and Tablet PCs, and integrate with any back-end database or application.
