whitepaper Live Search for Mobile: Web Services by Voice on the Cellphone2008-03-11 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Live Search for Mobile is a cellphone application that allows users to interact with web-based information portals. Currently the implementation is focused on information related to local businesses: their phone numbers and addresses, directions, reviews, maps of the surrounding area, and traffic. This paper describes a speech-recognition interface which was recently developed for the application, which allows the users to interact by voice. The paper presents the overall architecture, the user interface, the design and implementation of the speech recognition grammars, and initial performance results indicating that for sentence level utterance recognition that achieve 60 to 65% of human capability.

whitepaper Humboldt: Exploring Linked Data2008-03-10 Hewlett-Packard
This paper presents Humboldt, a novel user interface for browsing RDF data. The user interfaces for browsing RDF data are reviewed. They argue that browsing tasks require both a facet browser's ability to select and process groups of resources at a time and a 'Resource at a time' browser's ability to navigate anywhere in a dataset. This paper describes Humboldt which combines these two features in a single coherent interface. Their approach is based on the operation of pivoting, which enables the user to move the focus of a browsing from one set of resources to a set of related resources. With repeated use of the pivot operation the user can browse anywhere in the data.

whitepaper A Federation of Web Services for Danish Health Care2008-03-06 Association for Computing Machinery
Having relevant, up-to-date information about a patient's health care history is often crucial for providing the appropriate treatment. In Denmark, IT systems have been built to support different work flows in the health sector, but the systems are rarely connected and have become islands of data. To remedy this situation, a service-oriented architecture based on web services for online exchange of health care data between the vast array of heterogeneous IT systems in the sector is being built. The architecture forms a federation of web services and enables secure and reliable authentication of end-users and systems in the Danish health sector. The architecture is based on national and international standards and specifications.

whitepaper Web Services Interoperability Between Apache Axis2 and the WebSphere Web Services Feature Pack, Part 12008-03-01 IBM
The WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1 Feature Pack for Web Services (hereafter called WSFP) includes a set of Java API for XML-based Web Services (JAX-WS) samples. These samples demonstrate the usage of simple message exchange patterns (MEPs), using both synchronous and asynchronous programming models, and support for SOAP 1.1 and SOAP 1.2. The samples included with the WSFP can be attached to different Web services Quality of Service (QoS) protocols. A QoS is the non-functional value added to the underlying technology of Web services that provides improvements in security, reliability, availability or performance. Web services server vendors must comply with standard specifications of these QoS's to interoperate successfully with other vendor Web services implementations.

whitepaper Ferm Enables a Firm Connection With China Using Citrix WANScaler2008-03-01 Citrix Systems
Ferm is a wholesale business that imports and distributes equipment for the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) market and the semi-professional market. Ferm was looking for WAN acceleration products but was skeptical about the technology and its price in general. Compello, a Gold Citrix Solution Advisor, offered a try-and-buy project for the Citrix WANScaler solution, which won Ferm over for a trial without risks. Ferm also found the administration of the WANScaler devices very easy. Like fine-tuning the devices to reserve bandwidth for Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol used for system administration was done from the intuitive WANScaler Web interface. Ferm can also upgrade the firmware of the appliances, including the one in Shanghai, from headquarters simply by using a Web browser.

whitepaper Invoice Processing in a Service-Oriented Environment: Explore a Process Integration Scenario Implemented Using Oracle Enterprise Service Bus, Step by Step2008-03-01 Oracle
Based on a real-life scenario, this paper demonstrates how enterprise architecture can be used to identify and model services required from a business perspective. These services can then be used in the composition and execution of processes. This approach guarantees that services provide concrete business value and can be reused. With this paper, one has implemented such a service using Oracle ESB by composing multiple, already available adapters and routing services into a flow used for processing invoices. This is done based on open standards such as Web services and various other Java and XML-related standards.

whitepaper Semantic Views for Controlled Access to the Semantic Web2008-02-26 Hewlett-Packard
The Semantic Web provides a good data integration and knowledge representation framework enabling sophisticated applications to reason and infer new information. Controlled access to data is extremely important when such data is being shared among multiple users. This paper describes a framework that provides selective access to RDF data by supporting strict views over the semantic store. They propose a view specification language that enables specification of access restrictions using domain semantics. The view specification is materialized as an RDF graph model representing a sub ontology of the base ontology by the view system. Standard SPARQL queries and other graph operations can be performed on this view model.

whitepaper The 9 Requirements for a Successful SOA Deployment2008-02-21 JupiterMedia
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural approach that should be looked upon as a journey within an enterprise. Different enterprises embark on the SOA journey with different aims. However, general goals include creating agility, enabling faster time to market and encouraging reuse within the enterprise. None of these are easy to achieve and require a set of guidelines that the author explores in this paper. Either way, what is outlined here are the nine essential elements of a successful SOA deployment: Careful Choices, Business Agility, More Than a Registry, Developers are People Too, Governance, Managing a Shared Infrastructure, Holistic Security, Performance and Metrics.
