whitepaper Integrated Video Admission Control for the Delivery of Quality Video Experience2006-06-01 Cisco Systems
Delivering entertainment-grade video over IP, also often referred to as IPTV, poses significant challenges as service providers scale solutions to manage millions of subscribers, withstand periods of peak demand, and deliver a superior quality of experience while balancing network capacity and efficient capital investment. In the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture, Cisco Systems offers Integrated Video Admission Control to deliver a high-quality user experience even when demand oversubscribes a network. This paper details Cisco Integrated Video Admission Control solutions for video on-demand and IPTV in carrier-class, IP Next-generation networks offering triple-play services.

whitepaper Ubuntu Hacks: Cache Packages Locally With Apt-Cacher2006-06-01 O'Reilly Media
If the user manages multiple Ubuntu machines, he or she probably wishes there were some way to download new packages only once and install them on every machine. Better still, it would be good if it worked totally transparently so the user could just use the regular package-management tools in Ubuntu and not care about what happens behind the scenes. Apt-cacher allows the user to do exactly that. With Apt-cacher running on one machine on the network, the user can configure all the other machines to fetch packages through it.

whitepaper Delivering IP Paging for Educational Institutions2006-05-22 Cisco Systems
IP networking and Internet technologies now have the ability to converge each independent communication system in a school or school district into a single resource. This is called IP convergence, and it increases the efficiency of systems currently in place, and serves as the foundation for future application expansion. The IP Paging system is based on standard networking standards. New systems can be easily and cost-effectively upgraded as the school's communication requirements change. The converged IP approach helps ensure that schools and districts won't be overwhelmed by a system with costly features that go unused or that can only be managed by a specially trained resource.
whitepaper Designing Large Scale Service Provider Dial Networks With OSPF2006-05-21 Cisco Systems
To design a dial network is a challenging task for Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Each ISP uses a unique method to design dial networks. However, all ISPs share the same areas of concern when they design dial networks" This paper addresses most of the questions above and deals with the design practices of using the Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) in an ISP dial environment. OSPF is often used in the core network of ISPs.

whitepaper Layer 2 VPN Experiences Over a Metro IPoDWDM Network2006-05-15 University Carlos III of Madrid
PREAMBULO main objective was to install, configure and operate a metropolitan fiber optic research infrastructure, providing a data transport network using IP over Gigabit Ethernet/DWDM. This paper describes the build up of both the physical and the logical network that involves the three different participating nodes: Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Technical University of Madrid and Telefonica I+D. The second section describes the different activities that have been carried out over this infrastructure: multi-video conferences, IPv6 experiences, e-learning experiences, layer 2 VPN solutions. The last part of the paper focuses on these solutions, describing both the current state of the art and the experiences that have been performed with solutions implemented in commercial equipments over PREAMBULO metropolitan infrastructure.

whitepaper Innovative School District Uses Wireless Networks to Break Down Classroom Walls0000-00-00 Cisco Systems
Using computers to enhance education in the classroom is nothing new. But using wireless computers to take education out of the classroom is, and the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system in Fairfax County, Virginia is at the forefront of this budding movement. Few years ago, FCPS decided that the Internet could significantly enhance education if it could be made easily available to all students and faculty members through wireless connectivity. In addition, FCPS wanted a network capable of supporting data, voice, and video communications. Among the goals was to enable videoconferencing with students around the world. FCPS chose Cisco Systems as the single provider of its Wide-Area Network (WAN).

whitepaper New Vertical Markets for Satellite Broadband Solutions2006-05-01 alcatel
Beyond basic Internet/Intranet access services, satellite broadband technologies are currently being deployed in new vertical markets such as wide-area governmental/defense networks, mission-critical networks for public services (public safety, e-health, e-education), and cellular backhauling. All these markets share a common and simple need, i.e. instant access to high data rate (up to several Mbit/s) connections, with a high degree of mobility and quality of service, in remote areas where the terrestrial infrastructure is not present or not sufficiently reliable. Historically, satellite solutions have perfectly matched such needs in the narrowband domain (with the Inmarsat service, for example). Alcatel's goal is to extend the relevance of satellite solutions to the broadband domain.
