whitepaper DNS and BIND: Security2006-05-01 O'Reilly Media
In July 1997, during two periods of several days, users around the Internet who typed www.internic.net into their web browsers thinking they were going to the Inter-NIC's web site instead ended up at a web site belonging to the AlterNIC. (The Alter-NIC runs an alternate set of root nameservers that delegate to additional top-level domains with names like med and porn.) How'd it happen? Eugene Kashpureff, then affiliated with the AlterNIC, had run a program to "Poison" the caches of major nameservers around the world, making them believe that www.internic.net's address was actually the address of the AlterNIC web server.

whitepaper Internet Exchanges: Moving to 10 Gigabit Ethernet2006-05-01 Force10 Networks
Internet Exchanges (IX points, or IXs), sometimes also known as Network Access Points (NAPs) or Metropolitan Area Exchanges (MAEs), are facilities designed expressly to simplify interconnection (BGP peering and traffic exchange) among independent ISPs and other carriers. With the growing popularity broadband Internet access, ISPs are increasingly dependent on IXs for local connectivity and cost control. As a result, a number of IXs are experiencing rapid growth in the number of ISP customers and the bandwidth required by each ISP. To meet these challenges of both more stringent SLAs and more predictable network behavior under different traffic loading, IXs are generally deploying simple Layer 2 switched Ethernet networks as the most flexible and economical network technology available to satisfy their customer's demands.

whitepaper Session Based Logging (SBL) for IP-Traceback on Network Forensics2006-04-23 Graduate Center
The widely acknowledged problem of reliably identifying the origin of information in cyberspace has been the subject of much research. Due to the nature of the Internet protocol, the source IP can be easily falsified which results in numerous problems including infamous denial of service attacks. The combination of smart devices with powerful processing capabilities once observed only in mainframe computers decades ago and the presence of the Internet which allows communications between all those devices exacerbate the problem. This paper proposes a novel technique called Session Based Logging (SBL) for simple and effective IP-Traceback and logging mechanism.

whitepaper On Channel Selection Strategies for Multi-Channel MAC Protocols in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks2006-04-11 University of Calgary
Multi-channel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols have recently been proposed to improve the performance of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) in IEEE 802.11 wireless ad hoc networks. This paper uses ns-2 network simulations to study the impact of channel selection techniques on multi-channel MAC protocol performance, particularly for the Bi-directional Multi-Channel MAC protocol. Three channel selection strategies are studied: Random, Lowest Channel First, and Soft Channel Reservation. The simulation results identify four distinct scenarios in which data channel frame losses can occur. Among the channel selection strategies evaluated, the Soft Channel Reservation technique is the most effective for the missed reservation problem. This channel selection strategy reduces link-layer data frame losses and provides higher TCP throughput compared to the other channel selection approaches.

whitepaper EMC and Cisco: Global File Virtualization Integrating Rainfinity With a Cisco Network Infrastructure2006-04-10 Cisco Systems
This white paper elaborates how EMC Rainfinity Global File Virtualization and Cisco networking technologies interoperate by discussing common deployment scenarios in customer environments. Rainfinity's split-path virtualization architecture leverages the existing IP network infrastructure and interfaces with Cisco Catalyst LAN switches. Rainfinity communicates with the Catalyst switch software, and acts as a layer-2 device, like Cisco PIX firewall's transparent mode, when performing virtualization functions in band. EMC and Cisco Systems share a common goal to develop joint networked storage solutions that are based on open architectures and industry standards. This jointly produced white paper examines Cisco compatibility and best practices to ensure the combined solutions meet network availability, scalability, security, and manageability requirements.

whitepaper Serial Technology Delivers 100+ Gbps of Inter-Chip Bandwidth for Next-Generation Networking Equipment2006-04-03 Cisco Systems
Cortina Systems is driving the evolution of multi-service carrier and enterprise networks with advanced analog and digital communications ICs. Cortina Systems and Cisco Systems implemented the Interlaken protocol specification: a new technology for high-speed chip-to-chip packet transfers. Jointly owned and developed by Cortina and Cisco, this new specification eliminates the cost and performance barriers of existing interconnect standards by taking advantage of serial technology to build much higher-performance networking equipment. Interlaken builds upon the logical structure of the prevalent SPI4.2, or System Packet Interface Level 4, technology now widely used in networking equipment. It preserves the capabilities of SPI-4.2 with multiple logical channels and back-pressure information, while eliminating its bandwidth ceiling and drastically curtailing its associated pin-count cost.

whitepaper Designing the Mobile IPv6 Security Protocol2006-04-01 Groupe des Ecoles des Telecommunication
Mobile IPv6 is a network-layer mobility protocol for the IPv6 Internet. The protocol includes several security mechanisms, such as the return-routability tests for the care-of addresses. This paper explains the threat model and design principles that motivated the Mobile IPv6 security features. While many of the ideas have become parts of the standard toolkit for designing Internet mobility protocols, some details of the reasoning have not been previously documented.

whitepaper System-on-a-Chip With Security Modules for Network Home Electric Appliances2006-04-01 Fujitsu
Home electric appliances connected to the Internet and other networks allow users to easily access a variety of information and services. However, the users of such appliances are increasingly exposed to the threat of information leaks, unauthorized access, and other risks. Therefore, home electric appliances connected to networks must provide adequate security functions. This paper introduces three new Fujitsu System-on-a-Chips (SoCs) developed for network home electric appliances. These SoCs provide network, security, and control functions for home electric appliances and peripheral components. Moreover, when connected to an existing system, they can be used as slave processors for network and security processing.

whitepaper Consumer VoIP and Beyond: Service Provider Challenges and Opportunities2006-04-01 Alcatel-Lucent
For service providers that want to maximize their ability to provide the next generation services, an understanding of how the market is segmented, as well as the drivers and inhibitors that impact both the service providers and their consumer customers, is essential. However, complicating matters is the fierce competition among various players that range from ILECs and VNOs to those "Wild cards," such as Skype and GoogleTalk that have the potential to be highly disruptive forces in the market. Lucent Technologies' full range of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)- powered VoIP solutions, backed by the integration, consulting and deployment capabilities of Lucent Worldwide Services, allow service providers, no matter what their situation, to take full advantage of this unique opportunity.

whitepaper Practical Advices for Setting Up IP Streaming Services2006-04-01 Unreal Streaming Technologies
Rapid development of IP networks and last mile technologies has created the possibility of setting up streaming services for virtually anybody with Internet access. Home DSL users, small businesses, technology and media companies, entertainment and telecommunications companies - they all want establishing streaming services to be as easy as setting up web server for their web sites. Unfortunately, the technology in its current state does not provide simple way of setting up streaming services. The main reason for that is - streaming is a distributed technology involving many computers, networks and large amounts of bandwidth. This paper tries to emphasize the major practical aspects of the streaming technology from the service provider perspective.
