RSM Enhances Access to Vital Information With Powerful Search Capabilities | 2008-08-01 | Oracle |
| The Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) wanted to consolidate search engines, eliminating the need for separate engines for internal and external Web sites and enhance access capabilities, preventing external users from accessing information and ensuring that internal users can search only information for which they are authorized. The challenge was to deploy a search engine that is easy to administer by nontechnical personnel and gain the ability to add information and sources quickly to the search engine. RSM implemented Oracle Secure Enterprise Search as RSM's new search engine and integrated Oracle Secure Enterprise Search as a portlet in a single-enterprise Oracle Portal installation, allowing external and internal users to use the same portlet and search engine.

Thomson Reuters Adds Value to Web Search With Software + Services Approach | 2008-08-01 | Microsoft |
| Thomson Reuters wanted to give its customers a better experience than they could get from using the company's information services and then separately using Internet search engines. With a software-plus-services approach, the company integrated Microsoft Live Search with its own proprietary search engine and databases, and added further value by analyzing, editing, and reordering the search results for maximum relevancy and usefulness before presenting them to customers. As a result, customers are spending more time using Thomson Reuters information service products, indicating greater satisfaction with those products. With its search solution, the company proved the value of providing new services centrally to be consumed by its various information service products.

BrowseRank: Letting Web Users Vote for Page Importance | 2008-07-24 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| This paper proposes a new method for computing page importance, referred to as BrowseRank. The conventional approach to compute page importance is to exploit the link graph of the web and to build a model based on that graph. For instance, PageRank is such an algorithm, which employs a discrete-time Markov process as the model. Unfortunately, the link graph might be incomplete and inaccurate with respect to data for determining page importance, because links can be easily added and deleted by web content creators. This paper proposes computing page importance by using a 'User browsing graph' created from user behavior data.

Enhancing Web Search by Promoting Multiple Search Engine Use | 2008-07-24 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| This paper proposes and evaluates a framework that maximizes users' search effectiveness by directing them to the engine that yields the best results for the current query. In contrast to prior work on meta-search, the paper does not advocate for replacement of multiple engines with an aggregate one, but rather facilitate simultaneous use of individual engines. This paper describes a machine learning approach to supporting switching between search engines and demonstrates its viability at tolerable interruption levels. | |||

Technology Company Enhances Productivity, Customer Service With New Search Solution | 2008-07-01 | Microsoft |
| NetIQ wanted to provide its sales force with up-to-date product and strategic information, but the company's intranet was difficult to use. Many of the approximately 2,000 employees stored critical information in shared folders, making it necessary for others to check multiple sources for relevant documents. To improve information access, NetIQ moved to an intranet solution that takes advantage of the enterprise search capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Sales people now have a single, searchable source for timely, accurate information, which has increased their productivity and responsiveness to customers. NetIQ now develops new features more quickly than with the previous intranet, making the new solution more cost-effective and a better return on investment.

A Semantic Search Engine for Spatial Web Portals | 2008-05-30 | George Mason University |
| Spatial Web Portals, such as NASA's Earth Science Gateway (ESG, esg.gsfc.nasa.gov) and ESIP's Earth Information Exchange (EIE, eie.esipfed.org) have improved the sharing, exchanging, and interoperating of Earth science information. Large amount of geospatial metadata, data, and web services have been collected for SWPs to serve different user communities. However, most search engines in SWPs are based on keyword matching, which does not 'Understand' the meaning of user's queries and is not friendly to end users, especially when a user has limited Earth science knowledge. Therefore, it is a challenge to find needed data from a variety of geospatial resources in an intelligent manner. This paper introduces the efforts on integrating semantic search engine to make the search intelligent.

Approximate Matching for Peer-to-Peer Overlays With Cubit | 2008-05-21 | Microsoft |
| Keyword search is a critical component in most content retrieval systems. Despite the emergence of completely decentralized and efficient peer-to-peer techniques for content distribution, there have not been similarly efficient, accurate, and decentralized mechanisms for content discovery based on approximate search keys. This paper presents a scalable and efficient peer-to-peer system called Cubit with a new search primitive that can efficiently find the k data items with keys most similar to a given search key.
