whitepaper Framework for Layered 3D Video Streaming2006-04-25 Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
This paper presents a layered framework for 3D-TV applications, combining multiview and depth-image based approaches in a scalable fashion. To solve the problem of missing data due to disocclusions, the paper adds specific layers for coded occlusion data and the edge-mask information for high-quality 3D rendering of key objects in the scene. The paper shows how the same framework can be extended towards FTV applications by jointly addressing simulcast and multicast transmission. By adopting a distributed delivery architecture, new interesting properties can be realized such as shared processing for the creation and streaming of virtual viewpoints.

whitepaper A Guided Tour of Windows Presentation Foundation2005-09-01 Microsoft
Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly known as "Avalon") is the new strategic graphics subsystem in Windows that provides a unified approach to user interface, 2D and 3D graphics, documents and media. Built on the .NET Framework foundation and utilizing Direct3D for vector-based rendering, it provides a powerful solution for building immersive applications of all kinds. Furthermore, Windows Presentation Foundation enables designers to be an integral part of the development process by providing declarative programming models for "toolability" and flexibility. This paper provides an overview of Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly code-named "Avalon") and a context for this new graphics subsystem.

whitepaper 3D Die Design and Optimized Toolpath Programming Result in Big Time Savings for Rasandik Engineering2005-09-01 siemens
Rasandik Engineering Industries India Ltd. is a modern, state-of-the-art design and manufacturing company that produces sheet metal components and assemblies for automobile manufacturers in India. Rasandik Engineering wanted faster turnaround for its automotive customers and greater cost efficiencies for itself. In an attempt to speed the die design process and make it more cost-effective, Rasandik Engineering implemented NX as its solution for die design. The software had a short learning curve and before long engineers were performing die design exclusively in 3D.

whitepaper The Future of Cluster Computing0000-00-00 SGI
Without a sustainable computing strategy, can today's commodity High-Performance Computing ("HPC") clusters take advantage of future hardware developments? How are technical markets driving high-end innovation? What are the keys to a sustainable design strategy? These are just a few of the important questions addressed in the white paper, "The Future of Cluster Computing." In addition to trends shaping today's HPC market, this paper discusses the need to develop sustainable hardware strategies to eliminate the hidden costs/high total cost of ownership of current white box cluster implementations.

whitepaper The Impact of Universal 3D on Product Lifecycle Management2005-03-01 Intel
This white paper provides overview of the value and impact of Universal 3D (U3D), with a special focus on Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Interactive 3D graphics are a powerful medium for communication, education and entertainment. However, unlike digital audio, video, and photography-which are easily exchanged via the Internet and across computing applications-technical barriers have prevented the similar widespread use of interactive 3D content.

whitepaper Efficient 3D Reconstruction for Face Recognition2004-08-28 Microsoft
Face recognition with variant Pose, Illumination and Expression (PIE) is a challenging problem. This paper proposes an analysis-by-synthesis framework for face recognition with variant PIE. First, an efficient 2D-to-3D integrated face reconstruction approach is introduced to reconstruct a personalized 3D face model from a single frontal face image with neutral expression and normal illumination; Then, realistic virtual faces with different PIE are synthesized based on the personalized 3D face to characterize the face subspace; Finally, face recognition is conducted based on these representative virtual faces.

whitepaper The Design of the OpenGL Graphics Interface2002-06-19 Sun Microsystems
OpenGL is an emerging graphics standard that provides advanced rendering features while maintaining a simple programming model. Because OpenGL is rendering-only, it can be incorporated into any window system (and has been, into the X Window System and a soon-to-be-released version of Windows) or can be used without a window system. An OpenGL implementation can efficiently accommodate almost any level of graphics hardware, from a basic frame buffer to the most sophisticated graphics subsystems. It is therefore a good choice for use in interactive 3D and 2D graphics applications.

whitepaper Data Visualization Within Urban Models2004-03-29 University College London
Models of urban environments have many uses for town planning, pre-visualization of new building work and utility service planning. Many of these models are three-dimensional, and increasingly there is a move towards real-time presentation of such large models. This paper presents an algorithm for generating consistent 3D models from a combination of data sources, including Ordnance Survey ground plans, aerial photography and laser height data. Although there have been several demonstrations of automatic generation of building models from 2D vector map data, this paper presents a very robust solution that generates models that are suitable for real-time presentation. The paper then demonstrates a novel pollution visualization that uses these models.

whitepaper Data Mining on Temporal Data: A Visual Approach and Its Clinical Application to Hemodialysis2003-12-01 University of Udine
The quantity and complexity of data acquired, time-stamped and stored in clinical databases by automated medical devices is rapidly and continuously increasing. As a result, it becomes more and more important to provide clinicians with easy-to-use interactive tools to analyze huge amounts of this data. This paper proposes an approach for visual data mining on temporal data and applies it to a real medical problem, i.e. the management of hemodialysis. The approach is based on the integration of 3D and 2D information visualization techniques and offers a set of interactive functionalities that will be described in detail in the paper. The paper will also discuss how the system has been evaluated with end users and how the evaluation led to changes in system design.

whitepaper The Application of Streaming Video in Web-Based 3D Virtual Laboratory2002-04-16 National University of Singapore
A web-based 3D virtual experimentation system has been successfully developed for teaching and learning purposes in the National University of Singapore (NUS). Rather than simulating the instrument display on the client as is often done in other virtual laboratories, the real-time video capture of the actual oscilloscope display is seamlessly integrated into the web-based 3D virtual environments. The video subsystem can reflect the changes of oscilloscope display in real time through the implementation of its video capturing, transmitting, receiving and rendering modules when remote experimenters manipulate the real instruments through virtual instruments interface developed by 3D modeling. The exploitation of live video reduces the complexity of 3D modeling as well as promises a higher visual quality scene.
