whitepaper Educational System Cuts Spam, Millions in Costs, With Hosted E-Mail Filtering Solution2008-03-01 Microsoft
The Kentucky Department of Education manages the public educational system for the state's 174 school districts. An internal IT services group, the Office of Education Technology (OET), oversees the schools' Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 e-mail environment, which has more than 750,000 mailboxes. That environment was plagued with a growing spam problem, which slowed down the system and resulted in lost time and productivity for students, teachers, and IT administrators. To fix the problem, OET deployed a hosted spam-filtering solution from Microsoft Exchange Hosted Services. Since then, the department has seen improved protection against spam while realizing millions of dollars in savings related to e-mail management costs. The department's solution has also restored lost instructional and administrative time, and empowered individual school districts with better e-mail management tools.

whitepaper Dairy Farmers of Britain Increase Staff Productivity With Bloxx2008-02-22 Bloxx
Dairy Farmers of Britain (DFoB) is a company owned and run by British farmers in a bid to empower the providers of dairy products in the UK. At DFoB, the company had an open policy for its staff surfing the Internet. They were using ScanSafe upstream on their proxy server as a means to monitor their web traffic. However the performance of their Internet access was being dramatically affected, as each time HTTP traffic was directed out of their system, it had to filter through two gateways, consequently slowing down their access to the net. DFoB began to look into alternative methods to monitor its staff online. The company discovered Bloxx web filtering technology and concluded that the functionality met all its requirements.

whitepaper Web Filtering: Completing the Evolution From Acceptable-Use to Serious Malware Defense2008-01-23 Burton Group
Web-filtering solutions provide acceptable-use policy enforcement and malware protection. Given the rapidly increasing number of attacks originating from the Web, such solutions are ever more important. The landscape of web filtering is evolving as vendors mature their solutions, acquire competitors, and start to blend products with other protection functions, such as message security and content control. whitepaper Improve Data Protection Processes With Content Discovery, Monitoring and Filtering2007-11-01 Erudio Security
The traditional methods of protecting data are no longer effective enough. Security managers must take additional steps to ensure data owners and security personnel know where the data are located and where they might be sent. At a high level, this is the function of Content Monitoring and Filtering (CMF). In this paper, the author defines the challenges facing organizations as they attempt to protect sensitive information from both unintentional and malicious activities, including what characteristics of data make them an easy mark. The author then looks at arguably the most important approach to meeting these challenges - CMF.

whitepaper Relaxed Online SVMs in the TREC Spam Filtering Track2007-10-16 Tufts University
Relaxed Online Support Vector Machines (ROSVMs) have recently been proposed as an efficient methodology for attaining an approximate SVM solution for streaming data such as the online spam filtering task. Here, they apply ROSVMs in the TREC 2007 Spam filtering track and report results. In particular, they explore the effect of various sliding-window sizes, trading off computation cost against classification performance with good results. They also test a variant of fixed-uncertainty sampling for Online Active Learning. The best results with this approach give classification performance near to that of the fully supervised approach while requiring only a small fraction of the examples to be labeled.
