Is There a Security Hole in Your Windows Hosting? New VERIO White Paper | 2006-09-01 | Verio |
| VERIO's white paper, "Sharks in the AppPool," describes serious security risks associated with shared application pooling. Many hosting companies achieve server densities by sharing AppPools. But for any customer with a Website that processes credit card information directly, or has proprietary scripts, this is a significant problem.
Download this white paper to learn about the risks of shared application pooling and the rewards of VERIO Web Servers for Windows. Tags: Network Security, Security Standards, Web Services, SSL - TLS, E-commerce Security |

IPv6 - The Road Ahead | 2006-08-01 | Alcatel-Lucent |
| IPv6 is gaining momentum worldwide, driven by the need for more IP addresses than IPv4 can provide. This is particularly true in Asia where shortage of IPv4 address is more evident and the strategic importance of IPv6 is promoted by the governments. Indeed, even the US Government is getting on board with IPv6, with the DoD mandating upgrade by 2008 and other government organs likely to do the same. The adoption of IPv6 creates an opportunity for Lucent Technologies to provide additional solutions for existing customers as well as opening the doors to new customers as well. This paper describes Lucent's 3 phase plan to meet customer demand for IPv6 support.

AuthIP in Windows Vista | 2006-08-01 | Microsoft |
| To simplify Internet Protocol security (IPsec) deployment, Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" (now in beta testing) support an enhanced version of the Internet Key Exchange (IKE) protocol known as Authenticated Internet Protocol (AuthIP). AuthIP provides simplified IPsec policy configuration and maintenance in many configurations and additional flexibility for IPsec peer authentication.

Distributed Nonlinear Integer Optimization for Data-Optical Internetworking | 2006-08-01 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| This paper presents a novel approach for joint optical network provisioning and Internet Protocol (IP) traffic engineering, in which the IP and optical networks collaboratively optimize a combined objective of network performance and lightpath provisioning cost. The authors develop a framework for distributed multilayer optimization. This framework is built upon the IP-over-Optical (IPO) overlay model, where each network domain has a limited view of the other. The formulation allows the two domains to communicate and coordinate their decisions through minimal information exchange.

4CP: Competitive and Considerate Congestion Control Protocol | 2006-08-01 | Microsoft |
| This paper presents a first practical packet-level window-based congestion controller (4CP) that implements farsighted strategy, which was introduced and shown to be optimal for sources that value large long-run average throughput and are indifferent to sporadic throughput degradations. The target loss probability is adapted very slowly so that the 4CP source verifies a given (TCP) loss-throughput formula over large timescale. The send rate is reduced to (virtually) zero in a controlled manner only during bad congestion phases, and not under full control of other (TCP) transfers, as it is the case with prior low-priority service emulators.

A Budget-Balanced and Price-Adaptive Credit Protocol for MANETs | 2006-08-01 | Columbia University |
| A virtual credit exchange protocol for Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) is proposed to enforce the cooperation of packet forwarding. In this protocol, each node decides a price i.e. the number of credits) charged for forwarding a unit amount of traffic (i.e. one data packet). One node's pricing decision only depends on the prices of nodes that are going to forward packets for it. Each node updates its price adaptively and distributively. Under certain condition of the demand relationship between all nodes, this protocol converges to a unique price solution and provides sustainable and stable credit levels for all nodes.

Email Thread Reassembly Using Similarity Matching | 2006-07-28 | National Chiao Tung University |
| Email thread reassembly is the task of linking messages by parent-child relationships. This paper presents two approaches to address this problem. One exploits previously undocumented header information from the Microsoft Exchange Protocol. The other uses string similarity metrics and a heuristic algorithm to reassemble threads in the absence of header information. The pros and cons of both methods are discussed. The similarity matching method is evaluated using the Enron email corpus and found to perform well.

Dynamic Model Checking of C Cryptographic Protocol Implementations | 2006-07-16 | Alcatel-Lucent |
| This paper describes the Dolev-Yao C (DYC) cryptographic protocol message API. In addition to generating executable protocol implementations, DYC can be used to generate constraints on an attacker against the protocol. The resulting constraints can be handed to a constraint solver, which (if successful) will find an executable attack against the protocol. This is the first attempt to automate the discovery of flaws with executable cryptographic protocol implementations, rather than high-level protocol specifications or simulations.

HP Open View Route Analytics Management System for Converged Networks White Paper | 2006-07-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is transforming corporate and consumer communications today. Service providers have invested in VoIP for years and are starting to see a noticeable ramp in VoIP subscribers, while a significant percentage of enterprises have now deployed some VoIP in their networks, at least in a pilot phase. These deployments are confirming the business drivers for VoIP - strategic convergence around IP networks for cost economies, and increased productivity based on the flexibility and feature-richness of IP telephony solutions. This paper provides an overview of the state of VoIP deployment and management today, and the need for a comprehensive, multi-faceted VoIP management strategy.
