Backpacking Your Way Through CDISC: A Budget-Minded Guide to Basic Concepts and Implementation | 2009-02-27 | SAS Institute |
| By now, most people who work in the health sciences industry have at least heard the CDISC (Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium) acronym, but there is still a widely varying level of understanding of its concepts and with compliance among many in the field. Numerous helpful resources are available for CDISC training and implementation. However, many of these options can be costly for companies who want to work towards compliance but are not ready to make a large up-front investment. This paper offers some tips for how to approach the journey toward CDISC compliance without having to break the bank. Primary among these is that if one is a current SAS user one may already have many of the supplies one needs. | |||

Exchanging Data Between Globally Accepted Technologies | 2009-01-01 | |
| When one is totally confused in today's decentralized, distributed environment for exchange of information, one can still encounter well-standardized, globally accepted technologies. Each of these technologies serves very well in their respective domain. But when the question arises as to how data can be exchanged between these technologies, one face a lot of difficulties. For instance, CORBA achieves interoperability between languages, hardware platforms, and Operating Systems quite well. But when it comes to run CORBA over the Internet, it's a bit complicated that one cannot implement a CORBA based system so easily. Thus almost every technology has its pros and cons that developers have to look into and patch up the loophole depending upon the requirement.

Joint Data Streaming and Sampling Techniques for Detection of Super Sources and Destinations | 2009-01-01 | Georgia Institute of Technology |
| Detecting the sources or destinations that have communicated with a large number of distinct destinations or sources during a small time interval is an important problem in network measurement and security. Previous detection approaches are not able to deliver the desired accuracy at high link speeds (10 to 40 Gbps). This paper proposes two novel algorithms that provide accurate and efficient solutions to this problem. Their designs are based on the insight that sampling and data streaming are often suitable for capturing different and complementary regions of the information spectrum, and a close collaboration between them is an excellent way to recover the complete information.

| The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum Act, was enacted by the US Congress in 1996 to enable better access to health insurance, reduce fraud and abuse, and lower the overall cost of health care in the United States. Title II of HIPAA, the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for the use and dissemination of health care information. In order to comply with HIPAA, CEs must have organization-wide policies, procedures, reporting applications, and technologies in place to secure protected information, much of which is communicated electronically through email and FTP.
