ISP and Egress Path Selection for Multihomed Networks | 2007-01-01 | Georgia Institute of Technology |
| Multihoming has been used by stub networks for several years as a form of redundancy, improving the availability of Internet access. More recently, Intelligent Route Control (IRC) products allow multihomed networks to dynamically switch parts of their egress or ingress traffic between ISPs, also improving cost and performance. IRC products assume that the set of upstream ISPs is given and fixed. Typically, however, a multihomed network has several ISP choices and the actual selection of ISPs can significantly affect cost, availability, and performance.

Why Do ISPs Need LDAP? | 2007-01-01 | Isode |
| LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a widely used Internet Standard Protocol for accessing a directory. LDAP also defines the "Information model" of the directory being accessed. This white paper looks at why an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Mobile Provider would want to use LDAP and the benefits to an ISP of holding customer account information in an LDAP Directory.

Detecting DDoS Attacks on ISP Networks | 2007-01-01 | Carnegie Mellon University |
| Most past solutions for detecting denial of service attacks (and identifying the perpetrators) have targeted end-node victims. However, little attention has been given to this problem from an ISP perspective. This paper explores the key challenges involved in helping an ISP network detect attacks on itself or attacks on external sites which use the ISP network. This paper proposes a detection mechanism where each router detects traffic anamolies using profiles of normal traffic constructed using stream sampling algorithms. In addition, an ISP's routers exchange information with each other to increase confidence in their detection decisions.

Cisco Dynamic Flow Control Solution | 2006-10-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Cisco Dynamic Flow Control (DFC) is a service-control engineering solution for service providers that focus on real-time bandwidth allocation for shaping end-user traffic. The solution enables new "Connected Life" services, while ensuring quality of experience for subscribers. DFC extends the availability of the network's most valuable resource - its bandwidth capacity. The infrastructure of the DFC solution includes PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) technology in conjunction with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), both of which are needed to deliver bandwidth-controlled services to the end user. This paper describes a solution that enables service providers to offer differentiated services to subscribers based on client applications in use today, as well as in the future.

Video Internet: The Next Wave of Massive Disruption to the U.S. Peering Ecosystem | 2006-09-29 | Equinix |
| In previous research the authors documented three significant disruptions to the U.S. Peering Ecosystem as the Cable Companies, Large Scale Network Savvy Content Companies, and Tier 2 ISPs started peering openly. By peering with directly each other they effectively bypassed the Tier 1 ISPs resulting in improved performance, greater control over the end-user experience, and overall lower operating costs. This paper predicts a new wave of disruption that potentially dwarfs currently peered Internet traffic. Some of this emerging wave of Video Traffic is demonstrating viral properties, so the more popular videos are generating massive "Flash Crowd" effects.

Enterprise Networking Value: Service Provider Managed Solutions | 2006-07-17 | Nortel Networks |
| Service Provider Managed Solutions facilitate application-oriented and/or multi-protocol transport over the MAN or WAN utilizing an optical service which is monitored and maintained by a network operator. Originally used for service provider voice networks, optical networking technology is rapidly expanding to business end users. Enterprises now consider these services the transport medium of choice for their mission-critical networks, including those used for storage, data center connectivity, campus and metro-area networking; especially for applications that require low latency and high bandwidth, such as videoconferencing and synchronous storage replication. These services allow an enterprise to leverage a service provider's extensive experience in fiber optics and can easily and cost-effectively deliver the benefits of optical networking through a comprehensive portfolio of managed optical services.

Demystifying the PCI Data Security Standard for Merchants | 2006-07-01 | ComplyGuard Networks |
| The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security practices set forth by American Express, Discover, Japan Central Bank, MasterCard, and VISA to protect cardholder data. It is an industry-established policy requiring compliance by all merchants and service providers that store, process, or transmit cardholder data. This white paper from ComplyGuard Networks explains what the specific requirements of the PCI DSS mean for merchants.
The PCI DSS's special requirements for service providers are detailed in the companion white paper, "The PCI Data Security Standard for Service Providers Demystified." Why It Pays to Buy IP Transit Instead of Building Your Own International IP Network | 2006-06-30 | TeliaSonera |
| An Internet Service Provider (ISP) wishing to provide international Internet connectivity to end-users is faced with a difficult decision: Should I build my own IP network and peer with other ISPs, or buy the global IP Transit service. IP Transit is a way of outsourcing the production and operation of the end-user Internet service. In recent years, there has been a tendency among ISPs to abandon the IP Transit service in favor of solutions based on extending own network capacity and signing peering agreements with other ISPs. The change has been driven mainly by low capacity prices, particularly in key markets such as the U.S. and Western Europe.
