whitepaper Technical report: Oracle9i for UNIX on IBM System Storage N series2007-10-03 IBM
Database administrators and developers clone databases for various reasons, such as updating test or development environments from production or switching the production database to the clone in case of an emergency. Cloning databases usually involves both backup and recovery procedures. The clone can exist on the same host as the production database or on a different host. This paper describes the cloning process of Oracle9i databases using the IBM System Storage N series with Data ONTAP flexible-volume clone feature and Oracle backup/recovery techniques. Cloning processes under both NFS and FCP environments are considered. Procedures for validating the cloned data are also discussed.

whitepaper Best Practices for Oracle 10g With Automatic Storage Management (ASM) and HP StorageWorks XP120002007-10-01 Hewlett-Packard (HP)
Customers with business-critical systems who run the Oracle environment require both high performance and high availability. They tend to deploy on the HP-UX operating system, and they also tend to use high-performance, highly available storage platforms such as the HP StorageWorks XP12000 and XP10000 Disk Arrays. The successful deployment and effective operation of this type of environment can be enhanced significantly with a set of detailed and test-proven techniques. This white paper provides a comprehensive set of test-proven best practices to properly configure, deploy, and operate an Oracle 10g database using HP Integrity servers running HP-UX and the HP XP12000 Disk Array. Although the XP12000 array was used in the testing, the best practices derived also apply to the XP10000 array.

whitepaper Virtual Applications, Real Advantages2007-10-01 Macrovision
Suddenly the era of "E"-everything has been replaced by the era of "V"-everything. Virtual servers. Virtual storage. Virtual desktops. Virtual applications. Virtually every IT department has a virtualization project underway. Beyond the bandwagon feel of this trend, what are the real opportunities for cost savings, improved IT efficiency, and new competitive advantages? How can one take advantage quickly with maximum efficiency and minimal expense? Macrovision, a time-tested leader in software packaging and installation, now offers an extremely efficient way to prepare the applications - and the IT staff - for virtualization. The Macrovision solution, AdminStudio, automates the process of packaging applications for virtual deployment, so it cuts the time, effort, and cost required to make the move to the virtualized application model.

whitepaper NAS Virtualization Solution Evaluation Criteria2007-10-01 Project Performance
NAS virtualization provides the capability to effectively manage the heterogeneous NAS and file server environment by providing a layer of abstraction between the NAS devices, file servers, and the clients that access them. It provides a single logical view of the heterogeneous NAS environment spread across different file systems on different NAS devices by encapsulating the file systems and presenting a single logical file mount point. The backend NAS mount points associated with this logical mount point can be hosted across different tiers of storage. It also overcomes the limitations with the traditional NAS architecture and allows implementation of Global Namespace across NAS devices spreading across different data centers.

whitepaper A Comparison of EMC CLARiiON and the Network Appliance FAS Array: A Detailed Review2007-10-01 EMC
The CLARiiON line of storage systems from EMC and the Network Appliance FAS series are both positioned as shared storage platforms for customers interested in Fibre Channel and iSCSI solutions. Network Appliance positions FAS as a general purpose storage system to satisfy a wide range of application needs. Even the smallest IT shops want reliable, highly available systems that will perform consistently as their storage needs grow. This paper describes why CLARiiON storage systems provide superior performance, availability, flexibility, and features when compared with NetApp's FAS series.

whitepaper Philips Medical Systems Cures Storage Heartache With the Intel Entry Storage System SS4000-E2007-10-01 Intel
Until recently, images sent to the Philips Xcelera Focus system were stored on 5-1/4" optical disks and managed via third-party storage software. But this process was quite labor intensive for their customers, who often have very little technical know-how. When clinicians needed to view and compare a patient's prior exams, it was time consuming and difficult to locate and retrieve the earlier studies. Philips Medical Systems decided that a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) system was needed to cure their customers' storage heartache. After comparing multiple products, Philips chose the Intel Entry Storage System SS4000-E.
