VIRTUALIZED iSCSI SANs: Flexible, Scalable Enterprise Storage for Virtual Infrastructures | 2008-03-01 | EMC |
| iSCSI is a flexible and powerful Storage Area Networking (SAN) protocol that delivers superior capabilities and benefits across all market segments. In addition to providing enterprise-class data availability and performance, the iSCSI protocol enables breakthrough virtual storage designs that parallel the advanced designs of server virtualization technologies such as VMware Infrastructure 3. Enterprises of all sizes are building flexible storage infrastructures using iSCSI and advanced virtualization technologies that let them allocate and shift SAN resources dynamically to respond to the demands of their virtualized server environments. This white paper describes a virtualized infrastructure that applies storage and server virtualization technologies to cost-effectively achieve a flexible, high-performance, dynamic IT infrastructure that is simple to manage and scale.

Strategies for Reducing Data Center Power Consumption | 2008-01-24 | Dell EqualLogic |
| With concerns about power consumption and energy costs growing, efforts are underway to make data centers more "green" (energy efficient) and sustainable (reducing the use of non-renewable resources). In most data centers, servers draw more energy than storage devices; still, it has been estimated that all of the disk drives spinning around the world today generate emissions equivalent to 9 million cars annually.
Some analysts suggest that in 2008 half of all data centers won't have the power they need - and yet, many data centers waste as much as 60% of their energy on inefficient server and storage infrastructures. To encourage power reductions some utility companies and state energy auditors are offering rebate programs; consultants have developed new services to analyze power profiles and suggest improvement strategies. HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4400) Performance | 2008-03-10 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| The HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) product family offers midsize to enterprise size customers leading performance, high capacity, and high-availability storage solutions for reducing IT costs and complexity. The EVA provides virtualized storage enabling capacity pooling, simplified management, automatic performance load balancing, dynamic configuration, and re-configuration. Continuing to build on this success is the HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4400). Engineering advancements have enabled substantial real-world performance improvements over the HP StorageWorks 4100 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4100). The EVA4400's increased levels of sequential performance provide customers with improved data transfer rates for applications such as data warehousing, streaming video, high-performance technical computing, and backups and restores.

HP StorageWorks Virtualization | 2008-02-28 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Storage virtualization has been around for several decades. Virtualization is the aggregation of physical resources into a unified structure, and the presentation of those resources as capabilities that can be consumed by applications, desktop clients, or other types of storage clients. The term Virtualization has really become an umbrella that encompasses a vast array of encapsulation and management technologies and implementation methods.
This paper describes the business motivations for storage virtualization and the benefits it can deliver. Basic storage virtualization approaches are described and their benefits and limitations are compared. Finally, it wraps up with a description of the HP StorageWorks virtualization strategy. Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 Dynamic Multipathing | 2008-02-21 | Symantec |
| This paper describes the Veritas Storage Foundation Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) feature that first appeared in DMP release 5.0. It was subsequently backported to the Solaris 4.1 code base in SxRT 4.1 MP2, the AIX 4.0 code base in AxRT 4.0 MP4 and the Linux 4.1 code base in LxRT 4.1 MP4. These three releases and up are collectively referred to as DMP Backport releases throughout these documents. The paper provides a guide to understanding Dynamic Multipathing. | |||

SAN Volume Controller: Best Practices and Performance Guidelines | 2008-02-10 | IBM |
| The IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) has unique SAN fabric configuration requirements that are different from what one may be used to for other storage devices. A quality SAN configuration can go a long way towards a stable, reliable, and scalable SVC installation; conversely, a poor SAN environment can make the SVC experience considerably less pleasant. This paper captures some of the best practices based on field experience, and details the performance gains that can be achieved by implementing the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller.

Improving Storage Expansion for Servers and Applications | 2008-02-04 | Dell EqualLogic |
| Call it growth, scaling, or expansion - whatever you call it, increasing your storage resources often strikes fear and loathing in the heart of the IT administrator. It conjures up visions of downtime, extra management tasks, frustrated users, and working nights and weekends. In addition, since capacity and performance are intimately connected, increasing storage resources can require balancing changes that affects the entire the SAN. This paper describes a solution that can scale storage completely - online, without downtime or disruption - and makes growth painless and eliminates the need for over-provisioning.

DON'T USE: Inside the EqualLogic PS Series iSCSI Storage Arrays | 2008-02-01 | Dell |
| Storage management is at the center of an increasingly complex IT problem. Applications continually demand more from their storage systems - as performance, capacity, availability, backup, and disaster recovery needs intensify, so do expectations of the servers and storage that support them. As a result, IT professionals need a storage solution that integrates a full complement of high-end management capabilities, includes data protection, and operates intelligently. They need a reliable storage system that expands transparently and provides consistent data availability regardless of the server configuration, OS, or application. The EqualLogic PS Series of Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage arrays offers a fundamental change in the way enterprises think about purchasing and managing storage.
