Strategies for Reducing Data Center Power Consumption | 2008-01-24 | Dell |
| With concerns about power consumption and energy costs growing, efforts are underway to make data centers more "green" (energy efficient) and sustainable (reducing the use of non-renewable resources). In most data centers, servers draw more energy than storage devices; still, it has been estimated that all of the disk drives spinning around the world today generate emissions equivalent to 9 million cars annually.
Some analysts suggest that in 2008 half of all data centers won't have the power they need - and yet, many data centers waste as much as 60% of their energy on inefficient server and storage infrastructures. To encourage power reductions some utility companies and state energy auditors are offering rebate programs; consultants have developed new services to analyze power profiles and suggest improvement strategies. Microsoft Deploys EMC SAN for Data Centers and Reduces Costs by 50 Percent | 2008-03-01 | Microsoft |
| The Microsoft Information Technology Group (MSIT) was experiencing a rapid increase in the time and cost required to maintain its data centers. The storage volume was doubling each year and disk utilization was low. In the first quarter of 2004, MSIT worked with EMC to deploy a storage service built on Windows Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and the EMC CLARiiON storage area network. With this storage utility, MSIT has reduced administrative and storage costs while providing its customers with faster and more reliable service. MSIT has cut storage costs by 50 percent and increased disk utilization to 70 percent.

HP StorageWorks IP Distance Gateway Solution | 2008-03-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Today, most organizations are focused on their business operations and ask the question "Is business well-protected from a disaster?" There needs to be a well-researched response to this question. In addition to the business operation requirements, there are a number of regulatory bodies that have mandatory requirements regarding protecting and retrieving data that organizations need to comply with. Disaster planning and recovery are important subjects that every CIO/CTO needs to seriously examine and execute, as it is imperative that data is protected in any organization. This paper attempts to explain disaster recovery basics and detail several remote replication solutions that are available from Hewlett-Packard using the HP StorageWorks IP Distance Gateway and HP StorageWorks Continuous Access software. | |||

ASM and Multipathing: Generic Best Practices and Information Matrix | 2008-03-01 | Oracle |
| In this competitive business climate, well-planned business continuity strategies must include redundancy to ensure server resources are able to access storage devices even in the event of a failure. Disks and controllers can fail, and data paths can become congested resulting in bottlenecks or can fail entirely cutting off access to key information. Storage RAID technologies are great solutions for providing high availability for storage devices (disks), however, they do not address the physical path between the server and storage. If there is only a single path from the server to storage and one component fails, no amount of disk redundancy can keep the data available.

Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 Dynamic Multipathing | 2008-02-21 | Symantec |
| This paper describes the Veritas Storage Foundation Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) feature that first appeared in DMP release 5.0. It was subsequently backported to the Solaris 4.1 code base in SxRT 4.1 MP2, the AIX 4.0 code base in AxRT 4.0 MP4 and the Linux 4.1 code base in LxRT 4.1 MP4. These three releases and up are collectively referred to as DMP Backport releases throughout these documents. The paper provides a guide to understanding Dynamic Multipathing. |
