Virginia Community College System Protects Services for 240,000 Users With NetApp's Technology | 2008-03-01 | NetApp |
| Established in 1966, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) spans 23 community colleges on 40 campuses across the state. To ensure the highest availability of services, VCCS recently initiated a system-wide technology refresh that included setting up a new Disaster Recovery (DR) site. They wanted to ensure (24x7) availability of critical tier 1 and 2 applications to more than 240,000 users. VCCS standardized on NetApp's solutions for all office and DR site applications, deploying a clustered NetApp FAS6000 series enterprise-class solution that serves as storage for the Richmond data center.

Microsoft Deploys EMC SAN for Data Centers and Reduces Costs by 50 Percent | 2008-03-01 | Microsoft |
| The Microsoft Information Technology Group (MSIT) was experiencing a rapid increase in the time and cost required to maintain its data centers. The storage volume was doubling each year and disk utilization was low. In the first quarter of 2004, MSIT worked with EMC to deploy a storage service built on Windows Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and the EMC CLARiiON storage area network. With this storage utility, MSIT has reduced administrative and storage costs while providing its customers with faster and more reliable service. MSIT has cut storage costs by 50 percent and increased disk utilization to 70 percent.

IT PARTNERS Case Study: City of Phoenix | 2008-01-23 | IT PARTNERS |
| The City of Phoenix owns and operates the Phoenix Airport System. The existing data center was highly constrained, with power and air conditioning nearing capacity and very limited amounts of available rack space. Connectivity to the rest of the City of Phoenix, as well as to the Internet, was through a non-redundant network infrastructure. The Aviation Department's Technology Division selected Hewlett-Packard (HP) and VMware technologies to help address these challenges. IT Partners engaged with the city's staff to implement Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions within the Aviation Department data center and SAN replication at the City of Phoenix IT Operations Center.

How Cisco Multilayer Director Switch Operates With Other SAN Switches During SAN Migration | 2007-12-19 | Cisco Systems |
| Cisco Systems IT has long been a proponent of Storage Area Networks (SANs) over the less efficient and more complex Direct-Attached Storage (DAS)-based networks. The majority of early Cisco SAN efforts used the McDATA Enterprise Director 6064 switch at the core and McDATA Sphereon 3032 switches at the edge. This case study describes how Cisco IT replaced the McDATA switches with Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Director switches, which offer better scalability, higher performance, and Virtual SAN (VSAN) capabilities.

How Cisco Migrated to a SAN Environment in Small European Data Center | 2007-12-17 | Cisco Systems |
| During 2001 and 2002, the hosting team faced some challenges because of the dramatic demand in data growth and the limitations of the early DAS model. Another problem is that DAS architecture is inflexible. Moreover, tools for storage inventory, capacity planning, and storage provisioning in such a large and fragmented DAS environment were lacking. To overcome this challenge, the hosting team started the migration toward a storage model based on SANs rather than DAS. In early 2003, the team started planning a migration from individual SAN islands based on smaller Fiber Channel switches to a single shared SAN service based on the larger Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer Director Switch.
