Design Tradeoffs for SSD Performance | 2008-06-01 | Microsoft |
| Solid-State Disks (SSDs) have the potential to revolutionize the storage system landscape. However, there is little published work about their internal organization or the design choices that SSD manufacturers face in pursuit of optimal performance. This paper presents taxonomy of such design choices and analyzes the likely performance of various configurations using a trace-driven simulator and workload traces extracted from real systems. The paper finds that SSD performance and lifetime is highly workload-sensitive, and that complex systems problems that normally appear higher in the storage stack, or even in distributed systems, are relevant to device firmware. | |||

Making Use of Virtual Tape in a D2D2T Environment | 2008-05-28 | Clipper Group |
| A Virtual Tape Library enables a centralized, shared backup and recovery facility for the midsized data center. Combined with tape, in an integrated D2D2T environment, a VTL also becomes an integral component in an archival architecture. By connecting a VTL to a SAN, a single VTL appliance can serve as a backup/archival target for multiple heterogeneous servers throughout the data center or across a campus. One has a significant amount of scalability to work with, as he or she can configure VTL with as few as 4 entry-level SATA drives, or as many as 16 high-capacity 1TB drives. The data center has the ability to add new drives to the configuration as they are needed, or upgrade existing drives, as higher capacity models become available.

QoS Scheduling for Networked Storage System | 2008-05-27 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| Networked storage incorporates networking technology and storage technology, greatly extending the reach of the storage subsystem. This paper presents a novel Quality of Service (QoS) scheduling scheme to satisfy the requirements of different QoS requests for access to the networked storage system. The key ideas include breaking down the requests into appropriate chunks of smaller sizes and taking the network characteristics into consideration such that each session channel has smoother data access, resource requirements such as buffer usage are reduced, and more urgent requests can preempt a less urgent request.

The New Foundation of Storage: Xiotech's Intelligent Storage Element | 2008-05-01 | Xiotech |
| For the last several decades the underlying elements of data storage--disk drives, drive enclosures, and controllers--have remained more or less the same, and have been unable to keep pace with dramatically changing business requirements. Xiotech offers a fresh approach with its Intelligent Storage Element (ISE): A storage foundation that sets new standards for reliability, performance, and scalability. Read this paper to learn more about ISE and how it can help you.

Massively Scalable NAS: Pre-Empting Tomorrow's Data Overload With Today's Technology | 2008-05-01 | Enterprise Management Associates |
| NAS has always been simple...unless IT managers wanted to grow their NAS storage significantly. Then the simplicity evaporated. Now, with massive storage build-outs a necessity, a simply managed, highly scalable NAS environment is a must. For the first time, storage administrators are thinking in terms of managing petabytes of data. Fortunately, new technologies make such systems available even to IT shops with limited budgets. Now smaller firms as well as large enterprises can scale their storage to meet demands, and can align their storage investment to accommodate a need for more storage, for faster storage, or both.

Fibre Channel Over Ethernet Storage Networking Evolution | 2008-05-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Evolving business requirements underscore the need for high-density, high-speed, and low-latency consolidated networks that enable data center scalability and improve manageability while controlling IT costs. Data centers typically run multiple separate networks, including an Ethernet network for client-to-server and server-to-server communications and a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN). To support various types of networks, data centers use separate redundant interface modules for each network: Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) and Fibre Channel interfaces in their servers, and redundant pairs of switches at each layer in the network architecture. Use of parallel infrastructures increases capital costs, makes data center management more difficult, and diminishes business flexibility.

Cisco MDS 9000 Family: Total Investment Protection | 2008-05-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Evolving business requirements underscore the need for high-density, high-speed, and low-latency networks that improve data center scalability and manageability while controlling IT costs. As discussed in this paper the Cisco MDS 9000 Family provides the leading high-density, high-bandwidth storage networking solution along with Integrated Fabric Applications to support dynamic data center requirements. With the addition of the third-generation modules, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family of storage networking products now supports 1-, 2-, 4-, 8-, and 10-Gbps Fibre Channel along with Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). One major benefit of the Cisco MDS 9000 family architecture is investment protection: the capability of first-, second-. and third-generation modules to all coexist in both existing customer chassis and new switch configurations.

Open Storage Adoption | 2008-05-01 | Sun Microsystems |
| Sun is leading the open storage revolution, combining open-source software with industry-standard system components to reduce storage costs by up to 90 percent. As a general term, open storage refers to storage systems built with an open architecture using industry-standard hardware and open-source software. In an open architecture, customers can select the best hardware and software components to meet their requirements. For example, a customer who needs network file services can use an open storage filer built from a standard x86 server, disk drives, and OpenSolaris technology at a fraction of the cost of a proprietary NAS appliance, such as a NetApp Fabric-Attached Storage (FAS) system.
