whitepaper Tape: The Digital Curator of the Information Age Formation2008-07-17 Horison
The 56 year-old magnetic tape industry continues to evolve. Markets are shifting as disk slowly encroaches on tape's traditional backup/recovery market while tape is positioning itself for the exploding tier 3 data such as fixed content, compliance and archive market. In 2007, annual tape industry revenues total just over $4B including all drives, robotic libraries and media compared to a $26B magnetic disk drive industry. The tape revenue figure has ranged between $4 - 4.3B since 2001.

whitepaper TechNet Webcast: Optical Media in Windows Vista (Level 300)2008-01-02 Microsoft
This webcast provides an overview of some of the enhancements of using optical media in the Windows Vista operating system. It covers the new user interface for backing up and restoring information in Windows Vista and the use of Universal Disk Format (UDF) to enable users to exchange files between Windows-based computers, Macintosh, and Unix-based computers. It also explores the Image Mastering API (IMAPI). With IMAPI version 2, applications can burn audio, video, data, or disc images to CD or DVD devices.

whitepaper Fractional Rate Phase Detectors for Clock and Data Recovery2008-01-01 University of Minnesota
The use of optical fiber as a transmission medium in communications networks allows very high bandwidth to be achieved. However, dispersion effects within the fiber require that the data be regenerated periodically. Optical links typically convert from the optical domain to the electronic domain to perform the regeneration and then reconvert the signal back into the optical domain for subsequent transmission. In the receiver front-end, clock information is required for synchronized sampling such that the value of the input signal is sampled at the optimum time. They show a generic Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) circuit that is based on a charge pump Phase-Locked Loop (PLL).

This webcast provides an overview of the advantages of using optical media in the Windows Vista operating system. It takes a look at the new user interface for backing up and restoring information in Windows Vista. See how using the Universal Disk Format (UDF) enables to exchange files between Windows-based, Macintosh, and Unix-based computers. It also discusses how Image Mastering API (IMAPI) version 2.0 enables applications to burn audio, video, data, or disc images to CDs or DVDs.

whitepaper Security Bank of Kansas City0000-00-00 Plasmon
Security Bank of Kansas City is part of a multi-bank holding company located in Wyandotte County. Having worked for more than 25 years in the financial industry, Dean Foster, VP of Data Processing for Security Bank, questioned the vendors about archival quality and the backup of images placed into RAID systems, as well as future growth capacity within a fixed disk technology. When Foster reviewed available write-once optical storage options, he was very excited about a technology available from Plasmon, Ultra Density Optical (UDO). Since the Silhouette software worked with Pegasus InveStore, UDO was a supported option within the system already being used.

whitepaper Seven-Year Instant Cheque Access - ANZ Sets Industry Best Practice Standards in Cheque and Voucher Image Retrieval With EMC's Centera0000-00-00 EMC
Established in 1835, ANZ is one of Australia's 10 largest publicly listed companies by market capitalisation, with a market capitalisation of $27.8 billion as at 23 October 2003. The complexity of ANZ's system, which was partially outsourced to an external provider, meant costs were high, running into several million dollars per annum. After processing, images of vouchers were maintained on a distributed RAID disk system for approx. ANZ decided on EMC's Centera storage solution - a magnetic disc based storage platform for fixed content - as it had the lowest risk and total cost of ownership as well as other features required in banking, including automated remote replication, disaster recovery, guaranteed data integrity and high security.

whitepaper West Bend Mutual Partners With Network Appliance, Datalink, and Vignette to Upgrade Service for Customers and Agents0000-00-00 NetApp
West Bend Mutual Insurance Company has provided property/casualty insurance for businesses, homes, autos, and personal property since 1894. The company wanted to provide uninterrupted image access and meet 24-hour recoverability goal. The company also wanted to accelerate image-loading time and pass regulatory audits. West Bend Mutual replaced both the optical jukeboxes and the prior disk cache array with NetApp storage to support image access from within the company's Vignette imaging application. Following a tiered-storage model, the application's binaries and database indices are stored on a Fibre Channel-attached disk array that serves as primary storage. NetApp NearStore systems then serve the critical role of secondary, or nearline, storage for as many as nine million customer images.

whitepaper Multiple Robust Track-Following Controller Design in Hard Disk Drives2007-04-28 John Wiley & Sons
This paper presents a new technique for track-following control in hard disk drives, in order to achieve high tracking precision of magnetic read-write heads uniformly for a huge number of disk drives. The basic idea in this technique is to classify the disk drives into several sets depending on dynamics properties, and to apply a robust controller to each set. The problem of designing the optimal classification of dynamics and corresponding optimal robust controllers is formulated as a nonconvex optimization problem, for which suboptimal solutions are to be found numerically. A numerical simulation shows the usefulness of the proposed technique, by illustrating a tracking performance improvement.

whitepaper Forensic Data Recovery and Examination of Magnetic Swipe Card Cloning Devices2007-01-01 Reed Elsevier
Magnetic swipe card technology is used for many purposes including credit, debit, store loyalty, mobile phone top-up and security identification cards. These types of cards and the details contained on them are often relied upon as a form of identification and personal authentication. As such reliance is placed upon them it is surprising that they do not incorporate more stringent security features, and because of this lack of features it is not surprising that they attract the attention of people who wish to exploit them for illegal gain. The paper introduces the type of technology, and range of devices available for manipulating magnetic swipe card data.

whitepaper Disk-Based Data Protection Forecast: 2006 To 20112006-11-17 Forrester Research
Historically, data was backed up to tape. But with data growing at double-digit rates each year and backup windows shrinking dramatically or altogether, enterprises are increasingly incorporating disk-based data protection into their backup strategies. Initially, adopters of disk-based data protection were tech-savvy enterprises with the greatest need and tolerance for new technology. Today, a majority of enterprises are shifting to disk as the first line of protection thanks to less disruptive offerings, such as virtual tape libaries (VTLs) and advanced technologies like snapshots that are now easier to manage.
