Building MEMS-Based Storage Systems for Streaming Media | 2007-06-01 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| The performance of streaming media servers has been limited by the dual requirements of high disk throughput (to service more clients simultaneously) and low memory use (to decrease system cost). To achieve high disk throughput, disk drives must be accessed with large IOs to amortize disk access overhead. Large IOs imply an increased requirement of expensive DRAM, and, consequently, greater overall system cost. MEMS-based storage, an emerging storage technology, is predicted to offer a price-performance point between those of DRAM and disk drives. This study proposes storage architectures that use the relatively inexpensive MEMS-based storage devices as an intermediate layer (between DRAM and disk drives) for temporarily staging large disk IOs at a significantly lower cost.

Using CD and DVD Writing Devices for Data Backup | 0000-00-00 | SoftLogica |
| Over the past 20 years, tiny plastic discs have completely altered the way people store and access information. These discs rely on technology that was first introduced in the early 70s - on the laser light. CD-R and CD-RW discs have already become the "Floppy disk" of personal computing at the start of this century, and there is every indication that DVD may take over that role in the relatively near future. Both CD and DVD are great as storage for data backups. It is easy to have a backup copy at hand, because an individual can take the disc with himself wherever he goes and restore the files on any computer.

Separate Windows Processes | 0000-00-00 | VisualTweakXP.sytes.net |
| This webcast provides significantly faster performance and affords greater application stability. The webcast causes multiple instances of the same application to execute in their own process and memory space. Of course, the cost for improved performance and stability is memory since the application and its attendant DLLs are loaded separately for each instance. If a people have 512MB of RAM or more, this webcast is highly recommended because if, say Internet Explorer crashes then other Internet Explorer instances will remain unaffected.

Stories From the DRM World: The Settec Case | 2006-04-01 | Symantec |
| Alpha-DVD DRM protection contains rootkit-like code that may allow other third party programs to hide their processes and prevents security software from having access to their files. This code can readily be used by malware authors with little or no knowledge of rootkit techniques. Settec quickly released a free uninstaller for Alpha-DVD 1.0.3.5 and an updated version of the agent (1.0.4.0), which does not include the security issues discussed in this paper. This paper focuses principally on the Settec case. The paper discusses the security issues of the code implementation, including how it is different from the Sony case.

Two-Level BEOL Processing for Rapid Iteration in MRAM Development | 2006-01-25 | IBM |
| The implementation of Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM) hinges on complex magnetic film stacks and several critical steps in Back-End-Of-Line (BEOL) processing. Although intended for use in conjunction with silicon CMOS front-end device drivers, MRAM performance is not limited by CMOS technology. This paper reports on a novel test site design and an associated thin-film process integration scheme which permit relatively inexpensive, rapid characterization of the critical elements in MRAM device fabrication. The approach described in this paper provides an inexpensive means for rapidly iterating on MRAM development alternatives to converage on an implementation suitable for a production environment.

Single-Domain Model for Toggle MRAM | 2006-01-06 | IBM |
| An overview is presented of the use of a single-domain model for developing an understanding of the switching of two coupled magnetic free layers for toggle MRAM (Magnetic Random Access Memory). The model includes the effects of length, width, thickness, magnetization, thickness asymmetry, intrinsic anisotropy, exchange coupling, dipole coupling, and applied magnetic field. First, a simple perturbative approach is used to understand the basic phenomena at low fields, including the critical switching curve and activation energy. Then the more general model is applied in order to understand the effects of saturation at large field, and thickness asymmetry.
