Retail Services Firm Uses Terminal Services to Give Customers Real-Time Data Access | 2008-03-06 | Microsoft |
| Facility Maintenance Services (FMS) needed a reliable, safe solution to provide an access platform for its LOB application for its customers and remote employees. In making its decision, the company considered the cost of Windows Server 2008, the cost of the third-party skills required to deploy it, interoperability, performance, any new hardware costs, and the relative availability of the skills to use it out of the box. FMS considered the possibility of Citrix (which would cost FMS $30,000) and rewriting the LOB application entirely ($50,000). However, the company ultimately chose Windows Server 2008 because it expected the operating system to work with the LOB application and provide minimal disruption.

Making the Grade: Mission Critical Radios Give University Police the Dependable Communications Needed for a Safer Campus | 2008-03-01 | Motorola |
| ASU has four campuses. There are currently 65,000 students and there are plans to expand to 90 or 95,000 students in the next 10 to 15 years. ASU had a VHF conventional system originally designed for one campus. It had components that were 20-25 years old. The department started looking at replacing the old system about five years ago. They were looking for greater reliability and greater coverage in the buildings. It was also apparent that the department needed greater interoperability with the surrounding agencies. The turning point was Virginia Tech.

A Study in Mobile Messaging | 2008-01-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Mobile messaging technology is evolving rapidly to provide multiple services and applications to today's subscribers. With the continued delay of third-Generation (3G) deployments and migration to fully packet-switched networks, coupled with the demand for fast-to-market data applications over existing wireless networks, mobile operators look more than ever at their short messaging systems to fill the gap. Existing Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile networks use Short Message Service (SMS) as a multipurpose data service that enables rapid deployment of data applications without the need for 3G bandwidth capabilities. In fact, SMS traffic is growing exponentially, straining existing mobile operators' signaling networks and infrastructure.

Information Extraction From Voicemail | 2008-01-01 | IBM |
| This paper addresses the problem of extracting key pieces of information from voicemail messages, such as the identity and phone number of the caller. This task differs from the named entity task in that the information this paper is interested in is a subset of the named entities in the message, and consequently, the need to pick the correct subset makes the problem more difficult. Also, the caller's identity may include information that is not typically associated with a named entity. This paper presents three information extraction methods, one based on hand-crafted rules, one based on maximum entropy tagging, and one based on probabilistic transducer induction. It evaluate their performance on both manually transcribed messages and on the output of a speech recognition system. | |||

How Cisco IT Trained Users for Migration to Global Voicemail System | 2007-12-19 | Cisco Systems |
| For some users, voice messaging is simply a way to capture missed phone calls, but for others it is a business-critical application. Major employee training was in order when Cisco began migration from a transitional, service-based messaging system to feature-rich Cisco Unity, an IP-based desktop messaging solution. The training team was chartered to work from a global perspective: to develop a training strategy that could be delivered consistently to all Cisco users worldwide. It was clear that any training solution for the Cisco Unity deployment could not be a standard "One-size-fits-all" program. For such a large and diverse group of users, it was important to select a scalable yet effective training method. | |||

Microsoft Online Services Customer Story: British Petroleum | 2007-11-14 | Microsoft Tips |
| For BP, time was of the essence in ensuring the safety of its facilities and 1,500 employees in its Gulf of Mexico Strategic Performance Unit. It is responsible for a complex mix of assets that includes eight deep-water oil production and drilling platforms that feed thousands of miles of pipelines and more than 100 fuel terminals and offices. When Hurricane Katrina struck, BP needed quick access to accurate storm information and a complete understanding of its people and facilities. After Hurricane Katrina, BP decided to implement the Hurricane Management System that combines the 3-D satellite imagery of Microsoft Virtual Earth mapping software and real-time weather data with a visual, real-life representation of both BP's people and facilities.
