whitepaper Live Webcast: Simplified Management with IT Automation2008-06-25 Kaseya
Businesses of all sizes must now contend with complex systems and a variety of business challenges, including regulatory compliance, green computing initiatives, and pressure to reduce IT costs. Add to that the challenges of managing multiple remote networks and an unprecedented level of application integration, and you will quickly begin to understand the day of a busy IT professional. It takes all the effort and energy of entire departments just to keep up. And systems administrators must continue to think far beyond their day-to-day responsibilities.

But what if you could free up your staff from repetitive IT management tasks and more closely align their activities with your business objectives?

This live TechRepublic Webcast will offer a comprehensive overview of the IT technologies, solutions, and trends that are enabling companies to be more proactive, productive, and efficient. Moderated by Josh Gingold and presented by Jason Hiner, Executive Editor for TechRepublic, this interactive Web seminar will explore:
  • The meaning of IT automation and why it is so important to the future of your business
  • The features, benefits and challenges of current automation solutions as well as best practices for avoiding problems
  • The basics of successful IT management design, planning and implementation, as well as trends that may soon affect your business
Simplified Management with IT Automation is a don't-miss opportunity for anyone who wants to automate day-to-day IT management tasks and improve their IT team's -- and ultimately their organization's -- productivity and success.

whitepaper On Orthogonal Reduction to Hessenberg Form With Small Bandwidth2008-06-12 Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
Numerous algorithms in numerical linear algebra are based on the reduction of a given matrix A to a more convenient form. One of the most useful types of such reduction is the orthogonal reduction to (upper) Hessenberg form. This reduction can be computed by the Arnoldi algorithm. When A is Hermitian, the resulting upper Hessenberg matrix is tridiagonal, which is a significant computational advantage. This paper studies necessary and sufficient conditions on A so that the orthogonal Hessenberg reduction yields a Hessenberg matrix with small bandwidth. This includes the orthogonal reduction to tridiagonal form as a special case. Orthogonality here is meant with respect to some given but unspecified inner product.

whitepaper Improve Branch Office Admin with Flexible Server Solution2008-06-04 Microsoft
Paul Smith, a global fashion designer, wanted to improve management of its remote infrastructure. A small IT team in England centrally managed the company's entire infrastructure, including distant branch offices. Without local IT support, branch offices could be difficult to manage. Further, local systems could place the whole network at risk if they became compromised. To improve management and stability, Paul Smith is implementing the Server Core installation option of Windows Server® 2008. By taking advantage of hardened services and installing only the server roles required at each location, Paul Smith is reducing risk. With fewer components running on each server, the network will be less vulnerable to attack and software maintenance will be easier. Finally, Paul Smith can implement a remote infrastructure with Windows Server 2008 that is more strategically designed and managed.

whitepaper Maintenance Company Consolidates with Terminal Services2008-06-04 Microsoft
Tube Lines provides maintenance and support services for the London Underground. With employees spread across more than 90 locations, Tube Lines relied on its terminal services solution to deliver central access to applications. However, limited scalability and low bandwidth affected application performance and employee productivity. The company added more server computers to accommodate its users, but this increased the management burden and strained network resources further. To improve performance and simplify management, Tube Lines is implementing Windows Server® 2008 Terminal Services on 64-bit servers from HP. The company expects to decrease terminal services hardware by 80 percent, making management easier. The company will reduce costs as a result. In addition, faster connections and improved stability will help employees to work more easily

whitepaper A Two-Stage Plug-in Bandwidth Selection and Its Implementation for Covariance Estimation2008-06-01 Concordia University
The two most popular bandwidth choice rules for kernel HAC estimation have been proposed by Andrews (1991) and Newey and West (1994). This paper suggests an alternative approach that estimates an unknown quantity in the optimal bandwidth for the HAC estimator (called normalized curvature) using a general class of kernels, and derives the optimal bandwidth that minimizes the asymptotic mean squared error of the estimator of normalized curvature. It is shown that the optimal bandwidth for the kernel-smoothed normalized curvature estimator should diverge at a slower rate than that of the HAC estimator using the same kernel.
whitepaper An Architectural Model to Provide QoS in a Home Network and Its Evaluation in a Real Testbed2008-06-01 Academy Publisher
Home networks are an evolution of office local area networks, answering the need for residential distribution of broadband services. The design of a home network must strive to keep low costs, easy installation and maintenance while at the same time providing a large variety of services, from voice and data applications to multimedia streaming. A successful platform for home networking must put together simple interfaces for the users and sophisticated mechanisms for managing the distribution of the desired broadband services. This paper proposes mechanisms to support flows with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in a home network whose architectural model has been defined in the framework of the European IST ePerSpace project.
