SINGAPORE--Local females between 18 and 29 would like to get traffic news updates on their handphones, as well as sales and promotional activities on offer, and even horoscopes and fortune reading. Their male counterparts want to be able to see who they are talking with.

These are some findings of a recent focus group survey commissioned by Sonera zed--a company that provides personalized information, communication and entertainment services for mobile devices--to identify the mobile information services desired by Singaporeans.

The survey also found that an older, mixed gender group desired 4-D results and bet-placing, and shares and stock-picks delivered to their phones, along with international, local and soccer news updates.

Women in the 18-29 age-group proved to be the most enthusiastic users of SMS, and were more willing to pay for mobile value added services. On the other hand, males in that age-group are in the habit of going online to get lifestyle information and share messages, and were therefore more resistant to paying for such services.

Half of those in the 18-29 groups were working, while the remainder were students.

What all three groups has in common were cost-consciousness as to the best package deal for SMS services.

"Clearly, there are differences in services requested by males versus females, as well as across the different age groups," noted Sonera zed managing director Andy Chong in a release. "However, these preferences highlighted a strong demand and potential for the relevant type of mobile service."

He pointed out that his company already has various mobile services that suit the three groups. "As a result of this," he said, "zed (services) is becoming increasingly popular in Singapore as it delivers information customers want. Relevance of information and services is key."

The reaction to a report issued Tuesday by Flurry Analytics managed to completely overlook some interesting news--the Android-based Motorola Droid outsold the original iPhone over the same period of time following their respective launches--to focus instead on the sales numbers for the Nexus One.
