A commerce degree holder asks how best to choose the right SAP-related course to increase her chances of gaining employment in the field.
Looking for IT career advice? Post your question here, and we'll get our experts to answer. We regret, however, that some questions may not be answered due to insufficient information.
Q. I am a housewife, aged 35, and a Bachelor of Commerce holder. I also completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) at NIIT in India.
Now, I live in Singapore, where I wish to work.
Before I do that, I want to pursue an SAP-related certificate course but I am really confused as to which course to choose. Can you give me some advice?
Career advice from Tay Kok Choon, country manager of JobStreet Singapore:
I believe that it will be good for the candidate to find employment first, prior to selecting an SAP-related course that is relevant to the work on hand.
It is always good to gain some actual working experience first. In fact, by doing so, it will reduce the confusion she is experiencing as the goal and outcome of the course becomes more clearly defined.
For IT, as in other professions, continuous training is beneficial for career development. However, we must be cautious not to overtrain or undertake inappropriate training.
SAP-related training is broadly divided into three types/levels:
1. User-type training: Relevant for people who want to use specific modules or areas of the application. IT professionals should be able to master it in a very short time-frame.
2. Basic system training: This is relevant for entry level staff involved in the configuration of the application so that it can be implemented within an organization.
3. System analyst-type training: Relevant for people who have sufficient technical depth and business knowledge so that they can advise others how best to exploit the application to its fullest.
IT professionals should strive to achieve item (3) above in some good length of time--maybe two to three years.
