M'sian virtual varsity ties up with SAP on R&D efforts

KUALA LUMPUR--German business management software maker SAP, through its Malaysian operations, has formed a research and development (R & D) partnership with the country's first virtual university, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR).

This tie-up is expected to aid both parties reap mutual benefit; SAP to leverage on UNITAR's e-learning concepts to optimize mySAP.com e-business solutions while the former will help the university to create an Internet-based customer-centric environment.

In a press statement recently, UNITAR president Dr Syed Othman Alhabshi said technology was increasingly playing a primary role in education.

A recent International Data Corporation (IDC) survey indicated the corporate training market is seeing an upswing in the e-learning market, with data showing Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) labelled as the fastest growing region in the world.

Revenue for the e-learning market is estimated to grow at a rate of 20 percent from 1999 to 2004, according to IDC.

UNITAR is a wholly-owned subsidiary of KUB Malaysia, a public listed company pioneering in virtual education.

UNITAR employs about 100 full-time lecturers with a student population of about 3,500. The virtual varsity offers nine academic programs.
