Doing homework will never be the same again, at least for some pupils of Bukit Panjang Primary School.
Since March this year, they have been doing their Mathematics homework online as part of a pilot e-learning project spearheaded by the school.
Speaking to Singapore.CNET.com in a telephone interview today, Bukit Panjang's principal Ng Teng Joo said its Primary 3 students tackle their Mathematics homework by logging on to its virtual classroom once a week.
Worksheets and test questions, which are developed by the school’s teachers, are updated and downloaded weekly on the Web site, he said.
The school has partnered Singapore-based online content provider I-Tutor.Net Pte Ltd and e-learning solutions provider Inchone.com Pte Ltd on the project. I-Tutor.Net provides part of the online content for the school, Ng said.
"The school will select content that’s in line with what’s taught in the classroom," he said.
In a statement today, the companies said the virtual classroom is built on Inchone’s e-learning platform, which allows teachers to monitor their student’s progress online, and assign test questions and worksheets tailored to each student’s needs.
"Pupils will know that learning need not be confined just within the classroom," Ng said. "So long as they have computers and Internet access, they can learn anywhere and anytime in the world."
Students who do not have a personal computer with Internet access at home can use the school’s e-learning center, which is equipped with 35 broadband-enabled computers.
To a question, Ng said home-based e-learning does not mean that the school is doing away with normal homework altogether. Online Mathematics assignments incorporate only multiple choice questions and problem sums still have to be tackled the traditional way--on paper, he added.
Looking ahead, he said when the pilot project is completed by year end, the school would evaluate if it’s useful to roll it out to other primary levels for Mathematics.
Science will be added to the e-learning curriculum next year, the companies noted in the statement.
Ng declined to reveal the school's financial arrangements with Inchone.com and I-Tutor.Net.
The school counts Creative Technology Ltd CEO Sim Wong Hoo and InnoMedia Pte Ltd CEO Ng Kai Wa as two of its former students.
