A federal judge has appointed a mediator in the copyright dispute between Napster and major record companies. US District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, who ruled July 26 that Napster violated copyright laws by allowing users to download songs for free, named former federal judge Eugene Lynch as a mediator, Newsweek reported.

Lynch has held at least one session with the two sides and has another scheduled, Newsweek said. Napster's plan to turn into a subscription service won't work unless the company can persuade all five major record distributors to join, analysts have said. Last week, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld Patel's ruling, agreeing that Napster users violated copyright law.
