News Web site Malaysiakini said that it would release a report on the sources of its funding next month. The report "will explain that we obtained our seed capital from Seapa (Southeast Asian Press Alliance) and how we raised revenue from other local sources," Malaysiakini COO Premesh Chandran told The Straits Times.

Malaysiakini has been critical of the Malaysian government, and was reported to have received funding from US-based financier George Soros, whom the Malaysian government blames for sparking off the Asian currency crisis. The online publication had denied the report, which first appeared in the Far Eastern Economic Review.
