NEC, Pioneer, Philips Electronics and four other companies will jointly work to develop a system for preventing unauthorized digital copying of films and videos.

The companies will operate as the VWM Group to develop a system that will embed watermarks in film and video content that can be read by detector circuits in recorders and playback devices, they said in a press release distributed by Business Wire.

Company executives couldn't be reached immediately for comment.

Sony, Macrovision, Hitachi America and Digimarc also are members of the group that will submit its watermark system in response to the May 2001 DVD Copy Control Association request for bids.

The companies will license related property rights to VWM.

The companies previously were working on similar projects as two separate groups, known as the Millennium and Galaxy companies, they said in the statement. Macrovision will be responsible for all the marketing, licensing, certification and technical support.
