The company had reached its projected 55,000 broadband subscribers for the year in June. So it adjusted the figure to 70,000.
SCV senior vice-president of broadband engineering services Thomas Ee told The Business Times that three factors contributed to boosting the subsciptions.
Firstly, the price war between SingTel and Pacific Internet spurred surfers to learn more about broadband, and the various packages available.
Secondly, SCV introduced its self-service package, which allowed users to save the S$52 installation fee by collecting the equipment at authorized retailers and installing the hardware themselves.
Finally, the company also created new rates for its cable television service, with a lower entry price. More cable TV subscribers have led to an increased take-up of its broadband service, as MaxOnline subscribers get a further S$10 discount if they also subscribe to the cable TV service. So the net cost to them is just S$10 more.
"Many dial-up users have upgraded to our cable modem service, SCV MaxOnline," the paper quoted Ee as saying. "We have also won over many customers who did not subscribe to any form of Internet access plan previously."
