Amazon reaffirms profitability pledge

Amazon.com on Thursday reaffirmed its pledge to be profitable in the fourth quarter, as it posted a third-quarter loss that met Wall Street expectations.

"We continue to expect pro forma operating profitability for the fourth quarter," Amazon Chief Financial Officer Warren Jenson said in a statement."

The Seattle based e-tailer reported a net loss of $170 million, or 46 cents per share, compared with a loss of $241 million, or 68 cents per share, in the same period last year. Amazon posted net revenue of $639 million, compared with $638 million in the year-ago period.

Excluding amortization of goodwill, stock-based compensation and other non-cash expenses, Amazon posted a pro forma net loss of $58 million, or 16 cents per share, compared with $89 million, or 25 cents per share, in the same period last year. The company was expected to post a pro forma loss of 16 cents per share on revenue of $650 million, according to First Call.
