Pikom's 390 member companies control approximately 400 firms, and are involved in about 80 percent of the total ICT trade in Malaysia.
The association is organizing visits to Bangladesh, India and Australia to help its members gain business contacts in these countries.
Pikom will also lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 19th General Assembly and Symposium of the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) to be held in New Delhi, India from December 6 to 8, 2001.
"Considering the Asia Oceania region is a growing market in terms of IT adoption, there are bound to be business opportunities where Malaysia companies can export their ICT-related expertise, be it in products, services or consultancy," Pikom chairman Looi Kien Leong said. "We intend to fully explore this area and, at the same time, forge closer relationships with other ICT associations of the region."
He noted that two delegations had already visited Myanmar and Taiwan recently.
"In the past, we concentrated on domestic developments. Now we want our members to expand regionally," he said.
Looi was speaking to reporters after a seminar on the New Economy, organized by Pikom.
The seminar, entitled "Survival in the New Economy," was intended to be a platform for ICT companies to work with counterparts from the non-IT sectors to assess new business opportunities in Malaysia.
Pikom also outlined its intentions to boost the local ICT sector by establishing five special interest groups--technopreneurs, communications, information security, computer industries, and open sourcing.
The umbrella group also expects a lower growth of 10 percent in the ICT sector this year, compared to about 13 percent in 2000.
