Over the past six months, about 45,000 Internet cafes were inspected for workplace safety with 12,000 of them suspended and more than 3,300 closed, said Li Rongrong, minister of China's State Economic and Trade Commission. He was speaking at the Ninth National People's Congress Thursday in Beijing, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Workplace safety has always been of concern to the Chinese government, Li said. Over the past two years, China has improved its workplace supervision system, enacted new regulations and enforcement measures, among others, to help reduce incidents of fire.
In October, the central province of Jiangxi rolled out a policy requiring individuals to register with the authorities each time they visit a cybercafe.
