The Singapore headquarters of Renesas Technology will form the umbrella for both its South Asia operations and engineering departments.
The operations headquarters--Renesas Technology Singapore--will be responsible for sales and marketing of system LSI (large scale integrated) products such as microcomputers, flash memory and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory), logic, analog and discrete devices, said the statement.
The engineering headquarters--Renesas System Solutions Asia Pte Ltd (RSS)--will oversee three engineering centers in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan which are responsible for designing and developing application solutions for Renesas' semiconductor products.
"We see Singapore with its social, economic and political stability as an important platform for us to launch our ambitious plans in the region," said Renesas Technology chairman and chief executive Koichi Nagasawa, in the statement.
RSS plans to expand its activities to the development of middleware and to new areas such as RTOS (Real Time Operating System) and smart home appliances, said the statement.
Middleware has become increasingly important in areas that require massive processing such as image and voice. Implementing middleware solutions will result in simple system configuration and shorter development cycles.
"Renesas' substantial sales and engineering headquarter operations will boost the local semiconductor industry," managing director Singapore Economic Development Ko Kheng Hwa said in the statement.
Renesas Technology Singapore has a staff strength of 91, while Renesas System Solutions Asia has a regional staff strength of 110, including 44 in the Singapore engineering hub.
Renesas Technology was formed in April this year as a joint venture of Japanese electronics firms Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The firm designs and manufactures highly integrated semiconductor system solutions for mobile, networking, automotive, industrial and digital home electronics markets.
