Small and midsize businesses (SMBs) in India spent a total of US$4.6 billion on IT products and services in 2004, making them one of the top IT spenders in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan), according to AMI-Partners.

The market research firm also expects this demand to increase by 28 percent over the next five years.

Breaking the figures down further, AMI-Partners stated in a media release that India's small businesses had contributed to the lion's share of the total IT spending. This market segment forked out US$3.5 billion, of which 61 percent was spent on computing hardware such as computers, printers and servers.

According to AMI-Partners, the growth was driven by small businesses--with a workforce of 21 million--that were keen to "build a strong basic computing infrastructure".

Similar figures for the midsized-business market were not available.

SMBs in the Asia-Pacific region spent a total of US$46 billion on IT last year, with top-spender China accounting for 28 percent of the total.
