SINGAPORE--The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and IBM have collaborated on an initiative aimed at bringing technology closer to small and midsize businesses (SMBs) in Singapore.

Targeted to reach 10,000 SMBs in Singapore over a nine-day period ending May 24, the IBM Mobile Express is a mobile showcase that takes the form of a bus fitted with the vendor's business products tailored for SMBs. It will make door-to-door visits to SMB premises across Singapore, according to a media statement jointly released by both organizations.

Demonstrations on board the bus will show SMBs how IBM products such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), data security tools and messaging and collaboration, can be tailored to suit their business needs.

SCCCI President Chua Thian Poh said in the statement: "Many SMBs do not have the time nor the knowledge to get in touch with the latest technologies available, to help them reshape and remodel their businesses for greater success." The SCCCI is an industry body that represents the interest of Singapore's Chinese business community.

Nicholas Tan, IBM Singapore's general business general manager, said: "Through the IBM Mobile Express, we want to share with SMBs that IBM's mid-market solutions are accessible, approachable and affordable so that more mid-market businesses can leverage technology to transform their business models innovatively."

Citing figures from Spring Singapore, Tan noted that the SMB sector in the country grew by 8.1 percent last year, ahead of the national economy growth rate of 7.7 percent.

"This sector powers close to half of the economic output (47 percent), employing 60 percent of Singapore's workforce," he said.
