SINGAPORE--Local public transport operator SMRT has awarded a contract to deploy the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in its warehouse inventory management system.

TCM RFID, a Singapore-based RFID consultancy and real-time tracking supplier, said it will install the system to track items such as engine spares and components used in the maintenance of buses, taxis and trains operated by SMRT.

Michael Oh, managing director of TCM RFiD, said in a statement Tuesday that the system's 24-by-7 self-checkout feature can help SMRT technicians correctly identify and retrieve spares, enabling faster turnaround times for repairs and maintenance.

This initiative is one of the two projects by TCM RFID co-funded by the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star), under its RFID Innovation Platform program. The government agency has earmarked S$4.5 million (US$3 million) to help fund 30 RFID pilot projects in Singapore between 2008 and 2012.

TCM RFID will also receive a grant from A*Star for an RFID-enabled weighing scale designed to reduce processing errors, improve efficiency and reduce raw material wastage. The scale will be used by label and barcode printing provider, Honsen Printing Industries, for its inventory management.
